27th of Flamerule, cont:

Searching The Marshall continued

Chapter 1: Mero Fight


During previous session Atalaya, Nevil, Boz and Inman made it to the sunken ship, The Marshall.  Atalaya found the dagger that they were sent to retrieve.  Shortly after that two sea creatures (Meros) attacked them.  They were quickly dealt with as the previous game ended.


We search the dead Mero.  Take their 2 harpoons and a total of 7 gold pieces.


We then look through the opening trying to determine what the green glow was.  The rocks are covered with a fluorescent algae.  The area has a 10 foot ceiling.  The water is very cold, almost unnaturally cold.  Atalaya (and feels something swim by her.  She hears a soft voice in her head…more than one voice.  “Find my bones.  Put us to rest.”  She/they look around.  The voices continue.  “We are the devotees of St. Cuthbert.”  Atalaya feels something wash past her ear.  The water becomes cloudy.  The spirits are under the water.  


Nevil asks where the bones are.


Spirits:  “Some of the bones are in the ship and some are in the Harpies’ Nest.”


We agree to do that. 


Inman then says, “I think we have company.”


We whirl around and see a bigger creature.  He sees us and gets angry.  “Why are you disturbing this place?  


We hear the voices of the spirits saying, ‘He is keeping us here.”  They continue, “He is in the pay of Demogorgon.  He keeps us here.”


Atalaya takes 2  shoots at the creature.  Both hit doing 11 points of damage and 11 points of damage.  She moves her Hunter’s Mark to the creature.


Creature:  Hurls harpoon at Inman.  Kicks up silt and can’t see as well.  (-1 to hit until cleaned)  It jumps forward and reaches out with a claw.  15 points of damage on Inman.


Inman:  “Smack” him and hits him for 9 points of damage.  He then casts Chromatic Orb.  The spell misses.


Boz:  Attacks the creature using his shortbow.  He gets both a critical hit and sneak attack for a total of 26 points of damage.


Nevil:  Attacks with her shortswords doing 5 points damage plus 6 radiant damage (from Divine Smite).


The water splashes.  When it clears the creature is hanging in the water.


Nevil: wanting to make sure, hits him again for 11 points of damage.  His head falls off and the body falls. 


Inman:  His mouth drops open.  Then closes quickly.  He looks surprised.


Nevil:  “I had to kill him” she tells Inman.


Nevil and Atalaya head towards the hallway.  Two more creatures come towards us.


Atalaya moves her Hunter’s Mark to one of the creatures.  Then shoots 2 arrows at it.  They both hit.  Her horde breaker shot at the 2nd creature misses.


Inman:  Gets behind and above Atalaya.  Casts a Firebolt at creature.


Giggles:  Harpoon attack on Nevil.  Misses.  Then tries to slash Nevil with its claws.  This hits and causes 10 points of damage.


Boz:  Looses his balance while he tries to shoot.  The shot misses.


Sea Cat:  Charges over top of everyone and targets Nevil.  It throws a harpoon at Nevil, hitting for 14 points of damage.  Nevil is bleeding.  He jerks her toward him and bits her for 10 more points of damage.


Nevil:  Lays hands on herself to heal herself.


Atalaya:  Hunter’s Mark on it.  2 shots at Sea Cat.  Both hit.


Inman:  Begins a Bladesong chanting and sweeping motions manifest arcane signs.  He moves toward the sea Cat.  (Bladesong lasts for 1 minutes.  It increases his AC by +4, walking speed increases by +10, Advantage on DEX (acrobatics) checks, bonus on CON checks that is equal to his Intelligence modifier (+4).  Can use this twice and it renews on both short and long rests.)


Giggles:  Attacks Inman, hurls his Harpoon.  Critical hit.  Jerks Inman forward and bites him for 5 additional points of damage.  Tries to bite him in the face.


Boz:  Moves to be by Atalaya.  Shoots Sea Cat for 21 points of damage.  The creature seems dead and floats away.  Ichor is dripping drops.  Nevil is now attached to a floating corpse.  


Atalaya: shoots 2 arrows at Giggles.  Moves her Hunter’s Mark. 


Inman:  Attacks Giggles using his scimitar.  Critical hit.  The water has become gross.  Giggles goes limp until he falls to the bottom.


Atalaya gathers up the arrows and we loot the bodies.  


Find:

Nevli:  casts Cure Wounds on Inman


Chapter 2:  Searching the Ship


We go to the first door in the back of the ship on the right side.  Boz says that the door is locked.  It is a difficult lock, it is rusted shut.


Nevil: wants to hit it and throws her shoulder against the door.  It doesn’t move.


Atalaya breaks down the door.  It was hard to do.  Inside the room we find 15 intact crates  Sealed.  They are water tight and stamped with ST. Cuthbert.  (We find out later that the are copies of the Common Sense Book with Wisdom from Devotees of St. Cuthbert, a small 10 page book on his tenets.)


We head to the next room.  Boz checks and this door is also locked.  He hears a click in the door but can’t open it.  The lock is rusted.  Nevil pushes the door open.  We see fabric and bones.  There are 4 skeletons with torn robes.  They are in manacles.  We help Nevil to reverently gather the bones. 


We investigate the room.  There is a broken chamber pot.  Atalaya finds a holy symbol of Cuthbert that looks different from the others.  Better materials and it has a “sparkle” to it.  


Boz and Atalaya move to the next door in the hallway.  Boz investigates.  This door is not locked.  We see broken pieces of furniture.  Looks like it was a living room.


We hear skitterings.  We look for the maker of the sound.  A creature the size of a large dog comes skittering out and looks at Nevil expectantly.  


The large crab talks to Nevil (but we can all understand it.).  Clerical (?  Name?) taught me to talk.  He was a bard.


We find out that the crab’s name is Barnacle Bess.  She is happy that the door is open now.  


In this room we find mildewing musical instruments, clothes and _________.  No bones.


Go to the next door.  It is not locked.  We loot the room.  


Boz finds ruined paper and the Marshall’s gilded Navigator’s Tools.  (Room 5).


Door in front of the ship.  This door is different.  It is a puzzle door.  

 Atalaya and Nevil solve the puzzle.  When the last piece is placed the door clicks and opens.  


At the bar bow of the ship is an altar to St. Cuthbert and benches.  The room does not look like it has been defiled.


Search the room.  Atalaya finds a hidden lid that looks like it would allow the altar top to open.  She brings Vasilya over.  He carefully opens it.  “There is a little indention here.”


Nevil hands the holy symbol (special one) to Boz.  Inside of the lid is a mirror.  When Boz pulls it open sees a (metal) snake, a cobra.


Atalaya takes out her sword and makes 2 swings at it.  


Boz hits it for 19 points of damage.  (doesn’t appear to do that much damage).


Inman:  Casts Scorching Ray.  Makes 3 attacks which all hit for 24 points of damage.


Nevil:  Move up to the cobra and wacks at it.  First hit (short sword) for 5 points of damage.  The snake is coming apart.  Nevil continues to hit on it.   2nd swing misses.


Cobra falls to the floor.


Boz puts the symbol in the altar.  “You could cast a scrying spell with this.”


Looking at it he adds, “you could unbolt the altar to remove it.)


Chapter 3:  Wraith/Spectre fight


There is a dark feeling coming over the room.  The room is cold, like presence has entered the boat.  It tells us to put the Dagger back.  We see some type of undead creature.  And a second ghost like creature.


Atalaya turns on the Spectre named Ronnie.  Makes 2 hits for 13 + 8 points of damage.


Phil attacks Atalaya.  Tries to touch her (with Spectral Hand) but misses.


Boz:  Shoots at Phil  doing 27 points of damage.  Light dissipates in the water.  


Inman:  Casts Phantasmal Killer at the wraith (Phil).  Wraith fails to save.


Spectre (Ronnie) His hand grasps out and grabs Nevil.  She feels something and takes 11 points of damage.


Nevil:  Uses Divine Smite.  Attacks with her sword.  Hits for 7+10=17 points of damage.   2nd hand strike misses.  On second attack:  1st swing hits for 7 points of damage.  2nd swing hits for 6 points of damage. 


Wraith:  Tries to grasp Inman, but doesn’t succeed.  


Atalaya:  Attacks wraith.  1st hits,  2nd fumble: hits Inman (who is able to maintain his concentration on his spell.)  Atalaya moves back.


Inman:  Smacks wraith and misses.  Casts Firebolt.  This hits for 19 points of damage.


Nevil:  Smacks at wraith.  Hits for 4 points of damage.  2 misses and then fumbles her final blow.  She strikes herself in the face.  She is blinded until the end of the next round. 


Wraith:  Fails its att.  Fails saving throw.  26 points of damage (from spell previously cast by Inman.  It “dies”


We hear whispering voices, “Collect his bones.  The were corrupted by the dagger.”


Nevil and Atalaya collect the bones.  


The two St Cuthbert cleric ghosts give us 2 potion bottles that were lying in the silt.  They are 2 potions of Heroism:  For 1 hour after drinking you gain 10 temporary hit points that last for 1 hour.  Under effect of the Bless spell.  No concentration required for that.  This blue potion bubbles and steams as if boiling.  


They (the ghosts) say:  “We were missionaries.  This was our temple.  


Chapter 4:  Return to the Hond Ebrath


We make our way out of the ship and return to the Harpy Rocks.  Find and gather the bones.


We then make our way back to the Hond Ebrath.


Sorrow is very glad that he didn’t have to go swimming with us.  He and Cirilli greet us with dry towels and blankets. 


After warming up we dive back down and using the ship’s equipment we pull up the statue which is very big and heavy.  We get it on the deck and lash it down.  We also bring up the 15 crates of booklets.  The crates are waterproof.


Finally we bring the altar up and settle it in the ship’s hold.


We then change into dry clothes.  Boz lies on the deck in the sun.

26th of Flamerule

In Search of The Marshall

Chapter 1:

When we wake up in the morning, we have breakfast with the Greenleaf family.  Seraphina is at breakfast.  Boz and Atalaya sit down on either side of Seraphina.  


Nevil watches Seraphina waiting for the others to leave.


Nevil:  “You are an ass.  You sent the message through Ferrin to bring me here.”


Seraphina:  “You were needed here.”


Nevil:  “Tell them they were wrong, but Magrim returned.  


Seraphina looks pleased.  “Welcome back.  I may be an ass but I am a very happy ass.  I’ll pass your message on to Ailwin.  The challenge is in tracking him down.  


Nevil is 36 years old.  She met Poppy (Seraphina) at 17 years old. Nevil had been in a bad spot at the time.  Ailwin knows her as long as Seraphina has, she guides her into her faith.  Magrim was a harper.  People expect Magrim to be dead.  Very few people know her name.  (??)

She worked in Seaton in a revolt against Duke Orsina with Seraphina.  Nevil was from Seaton.  


Boz:  “I was in jail in Riverport and Water and well… never mind.”


Nevil doesn’t think she would be recognized by the Duke, but her name would be.  


Boz says that the Duke is not a caring person, not a good ruler.  And he has poor advisors.


He (Boz?) understands that the stuff in Seaton was bad. 


We spend the morning shopping and eat lunch at the Wicker Goat.  


A man comes in while we are there.  He is nice looking.  


Man (Inman):  Magrim???


Nevil looks up and sees him, but doesn’t say anything.


Man (Inman):  How can this be?  How are you here?”  He is too shocked to be polite.  He drops to one knee.  “I don’t understand.  I thought you were dead.  In Seaton.  What about your girls?  Your family?”


Nevil:  “That’s real.”


Man (Inman):  “Tell me when you are ready to talk.”


Nevil:  “Not here.  I guess Poppy sent for you.”


Man (Inman):  “Yup.”  He pulls up a chair and joins us.  “Inman Setter, 77,” he introduces himself.  


Nevil:   ___________________________________


Inman:  “I didn’t make the funeral.  I was too far away at the time.”  


It is around 3:00 pm.


We take Nevil and Inman aboard the Hond Ebrath so that they will have a private place to talk.  Once there Nevil formally introduces Inman.


Nevil:  “This is Inman, class of 77.  Me too.”  She looks around at all Atalaya and the rest of us.  “If there is extra room, he is good with the ____ _________________________.  


Annie casts off and sets sail.


Inman is glued to Nevil’s side.  Inman is a wizard and a blade singer.


Nevil asks about potions (to be able to search The Marshall).  Inman says that he can do a spell for underwater breathing.  


Annie lets us know that we are in the area of the sunken ship.  We anchor off the shore and retire for the night. 


              Atalaya, Boz, Sorrow and Cirilli head off to their own cabins.  As they go they can hear Nevil and Inman arguing in the front of the ship.  Then they (Nevil and Inman) separate.  Inman goes into the room that is considered Joan’s room where he had been told to put his stuff when it was decided that he was coming with us.  Nevil heads to her cabin in the bow of the ship.


Before everyone disperses Inman ritually casts Water Breathing on those who will be searching The Marshall tomorrow.  (Inman, Nevil, Atalaya, Boz)  (Water breathing lasts for 24 hours, allows for regular breathing also)

Chapter 2:  Morning onboard

When the group makes their way topside and looks into the water they can see the outline of the sunken ship below.  The highest part of the ship is about five feet beneath the surface.  Near the coastline we see some rocks and seagulls flying over them.


The Marshall is basically resting on the bottom of the ocean.  The main deck is about 15 feet below the surface.  The Poop deck is about five feet below the surface, and the forecastle is about 10 feet below the surface.  


Inman ritually casts Detect Magic while on the ship.  (For one hour (per notes) Inman will sense magic things or creatures that are within 30 feet of him, and he will see them faintly glow when using an action to search for them.)


We (Atalaya, Nevil, Boz and Inman) enter the water and start swimming towards the sunken ship.  Atalaya feels an urge to go to the rocks near the shore, but then stops.  Boz and Inman do not feel anything and continue towards the ship.  Inman feels a pull and swims towards the rocks where some strange humanoids are seated.  The rest of us, concerned, follow after Inman.


As we approach we are able to identify the humanoids as Harpies.  Atalaya casts Hunter’s Mark on Damien.


Harpie, _________________:  Grapples Inman and pulls back 20 feet from the rocks.  


Inman:  Clears his eyes and makes a saving throw.  He comes back to himself.


Boz:  Swims forward and then shoots his shortbow and hits Damien, critical hit for 13 points.


Harpie (Regina):  Tries tries to sing again, but has no effect on us this time.   


Nevil:  Dashes towards the Harpies on the rocks.


Atalaya:  Takes two shots at Trag and a horde breaker shot at Regina.  Moves her Hunter’s Mark to Janet.


Janet:  Rears up on her bird like legs right at Nevil and starts clawing on her.  Hits for damage of 14 points.


Sun:  Jumps over to Nevil and takes a swing at her from an flanking position.  2 hits, 10 points damage.


Damien:  Flies towards Atalaya but doesn’t get all the way to her  


Inman:  Casts Shatter and hits Regina, Tran, Karen.  All fail their saves and take 20 points of damage each.  Trang is killed.  Regina and Karen cawing and screaming leap into the water.  


Boz:  Shoots Sun for 19 points of damage.


Gretchen:  Dashes to Boz


Cady:  Jumps to Atalaya.


Regina:  Jumps into the water.


Nevil:  Smacks at Sun with her dual shortswords.  First attack: Hits, misses; Second Attack:  misses, hits for 5 points.  Sun drops down under the surface of the water.


Karen:  Jumps down into the water


Atalaya:  takes two swings with her longsword at Cady, both hit for 11 + 11 points of damage.


Janet:  Attacks Nevil.  1st hit does ___ damage.  Second hit does 14 points of damage.


Sun:  Dives below the surface of the water.


Damien:  Jumps to Boz and flanks him.  1st attack:  __________; 2nd attack does 2 points of damage.


Inman:  Smacks Damien with his scimitar and hits for 8 points of damage.  2nd attack is a firebolt which does 3 points of damage.  We hear a horrible screaming and there is a stench of burning wet feathers.


Boz:  using his shortsword runs her (?) through and then moves to flank Cady.  


Gretchen:  Moves and attacks Inman.  Hits for 7 points of damage.  Misses the next attack.


Cady:  Goes after Boz, dives under the  water.  We see blood in the water.


Nevil:  Swings at Janet.  1st attack:  both hit for a total of 11 points of damage. 2nd attack:  both hit for a total of 26 points of damage.


Atalaya:  Slices Damien in half with her sword.


Janet:  Disappears


Inman:  Smacks Gretchen with Scimitar and hits for 4 points.  2nd attack:  Firebolt: misses


Boz:  Swings at Gretchen and hits for 23 points  Gretchen tries to swim away  Boz hits and kills her.  She sinks down below the surface of the water.


Atalaya:  Gives out Good berries and heals Nevil 10 points using a level 2 cure wound spell. 


Boz suggests that we check out the rocks before heading to the sunken ship.  We see lots of litter on them including bones.  Then we start noticing sparkly things:

  1. Holy symbol of St. Cuthbert made of gold and sapphires worth 150 gp

  2. Piece of Jasper worth 50 gp

  3. Obsidian stone worth 10 gp

  4. Tiger Eye stone worth 10 gp

  5. 1231 cp

  6. 320 ep

  7. 164 gp

  8. 12 pp


We swim down to the ship.  There are lots of barnacles on the deck.  Inman starts noting the presence of magic from the spar in the front of the ship.  He senses that it a divination magic on the spar.


Inman casts light and tosses it (?) in the hold.

We can see that the area is wrecked.  There is algae, seaweed and shadows.  


Nevil:  something … not moving …


Inman notices something in chains. 


Atalaya sees a big statue on the floor, chained as cargo would be. 


Inman casts light on another rock, tosses it down the doorway.  Steps go down.  We see broken crates and barrels and the statue’s feet.   The space is divided into rooms, the main area is the other room.


There is a greenish glow but we can’t determine where it is coming from.  


Open 2nd door.  See pretty much the same thing.  


The ship is damaged on the front right side.


The glow seems to be coming out of the hole on the right side.  This is not sunlight.  It is a green glow.


Inman:  “There is magic down here.  I am sensing enchantment and necromancy.”


We search around the statue.


Atalaya finds the dagger and places it in her backpack.


While we are doing that 2 large water creatures approach, snarling in a language most of us don’t understand.  (Mero)


Nevil translates what the creatures are saying.  “Kill the Intruders.  They are invading the Shrine.”


The hallway is 10 feet high.


Nevil swims next to Boz.  Casts Bless (extra 1d4 for attack and saving throws)


Rascal:  Misses


Atalaya:  moves HM to 1st creature (Rascal) and then attacks, hitting X2 and adds +2 HM.


_____________:  slashes at Atalaya with Harpoon.  13 points of damage.  He tries to pull Atalaya towards him and fails.


Inman:  Casts Scorching Ray at __________________.  2 Rays.  1st hits and 2nd hits.  Total of 8 points of damage. 


____________  is hit by _____________ for 21 points of damage.


Nevil:  Makes a sword attack and kills Rascal.  She then swims to Tanner, swings and misses.


Atalaya:  2 shots at Tanner, both hit.


Tanner:  Attacks Atalaya and misses.  He then tries to bite her and sinks his teeth into her forearm for 8 points of damage.


Inman:  Moves to flank Tanner. Attacks with his Scimitar and a Firebolt.  Total of 9 points of damage.


Boz:  swims above Tanner and shoots straight down into his brain and kills him.
