3-20-24

 Game Notes 3-20-24

Continuation of 4th of Eleasis, 1491  Within the Wizard’s Tower at the Pillars of Pelagia

Inman had entered the living quarters of the wizard and moved into melee range with the woman we had heard talking about paying the captain.  Atalaya, Vasilya and Nevil had entered the room and stayed to the back of the room near the desk, with Vaz within 5 feet of Atalaya.  Cirilli had not yet entered the room.

The man is dressed flamboyantly like a sea captain/privateer, the man is slightly older looking.

The woman looks familiar to Atalaya at first glance, but she can’t quite put a name to her.  She is wearing very nice looking expensive clothing.  It is something nobility would wear or a high priced escort.  It is low cut and silky.  She is very attractive and has a provocative manner.  As Atalaya continues to look at her, she thinks that this could be the “girlfriend” of Duke Orsino we met at the “thank you” dinner we had with him.

Inman had started his Bladesong as he entered the room.  He strikes the woman with his scimitar for 4 points of damage and then casts Scorching Ray at her, causing 15 points of damage.

The woman snarls in Inman’s face and then holds up her hands, a slight shimmer seems to go over her body.

The Captain steps over to Inman and takes a swing.  He is very outraged.  He takes two swings with his scimitar at Inman and then attacks with his dagger in his off hand.  The first scimitar swing hits Inman for 5 points of damage.  The second scimitar swing misses but sets him up to hit Inman for 8 points of damage from his dagger.

Boz shoots his shortbow and misses his target.  (The Captain?)

Atalaya runs 25 feet to get a clear shot at the woman.  She shoots twice at the woman.  The first shot hits for 7 points of damage and the second one hits for 6 points of damage.  Her hordebreaker shot hits the Captain for 7 points of damage.

The woman attempts to Charm Inman, telling him he doesn’t want to fight them.  Inman thinks that sounds reasonable for a split second before he shakes it off for the nonsense it was.

Cirilli enters the room and shoots the woman with her shortbow for 7 points of damage.

Nevil moves up to the woman and attacks her with her morningstar.  The first attack hits for 5 points of damage and 4 points of Divine Smite damage.  Her second attack hit is a critical hit for a total of 16 points of damage.

Inman moves to the woman and attacks with his scimitar and misses her but hits her with his Fire Bolt for 10 points of damage.  The woman screeches in pain and fury.

Captain flanks Inman between himself and the woman.  He attacks Inman for 9 points of damage which Nevil absorbs into herself via her Aura of Guardian ability.  The Captain takes another swing with his scimitar that misses and then tries to hit with his dagger, but that also misses.

Boz moves near Atalaya and shoots his shortbow at Captain Skarne doing 19 pts damage

Atalaya takes two shots at the Captain Skarne, the first hits causing 12 points of damage.  Her second attack misses.

Woman (Pencheska) screeches and claws her hands and in cloud of smoke disappears.   Atalaya yells, “NOOOoooo!!!”  We smell fire and brimstone.

Cirilli moves closer to Captain Skarne and shoots, she misses, still unsettled by the disappearance of the woman.

Inman attacks with his scimitar at the space that the woman had been in for both his attacks, hitting nothing.

Captain Skarne attacks Inman with his scimitar causing 9 points of damage which Nevil absorbs (Aura of Guardian).  He makes another attack at Inman with his scimitar which misses, attacks with a dagger and Inman takes 6 points of damage.

Boz shoots with his shortbow at Captain Skarne and misses.

Atalaya moves to flank Captain Skarne and swings with Amaurea hitting both times for a total of 15 points of damage.

Nevil makes two swings with her morningstar on Captain Skarne.  Both hit.  He drops to his knees and surrenders, putting his scimitar and dagger on the ground.

We tie and gag him and then search him.  In his pockets we find:

9 gold pieces

6 pearls (like the ones we have been finding from the Sea Hag Shayonne)

Cirilli keeps an eye on the captive as we search the living quarters.  Atalaya searches the desk and finds a letter addressed to Lythra

The Suspicious girlfriend of Orsino disappeared

The group arrests the Captain.  The following letter was discovered.

Lythra,

Expect the Captains of The Maggie Mcfee and The Blade to arrive in the coming week and pay them out of the funds in the chest. For obvious reasons, they will not be arriving in their respective ships. We can be confident that they are sympathetic to our cause, but speak carefully around them. The less they know, the safer both they and we shall be.

The captain and crew of The Shalarin is a problem. As soon as you find out where the artifact is, acquire it and eliminate Hawk. I suspect she knows too much about our alliances and operations here. Her arrogance has grown tedious and I want her eliminated, but it's important to retrieve what is ours first. She may be the only person who knows where it is. The price on her head will keep her out of Daggerford for the time being.

She may try to sell it to Captain Xendros in Saltmarsh, but the constabulary is looking for her there as well. Xendros is a demonspawn mongrel who deals in relics and fish. I don't expect her to be much trouble if circumstances require us to seek her out.

Tolerate no resistance in this matter.

-RM

Also in the desk we find a sealing wax, papers, and a sealing ring with the letters L and N on it.

The group speculates but is hesitant to speak freely in front of the capitan.

Atalaya in her zeal searching unleashes a pseudopod that she should have remembered… from a door in the kitchen.

The black pudding oozes out of the cabnet and heads towards Atalaya who quickly backs up as she sees what she is releasing.

Boz attacks the black pudding shooting with his short bow.  His arrow hits and does 16 points of damage, but it doesn’t appear that any actual damage was done and the arrows start dissolving as if they were in a vat of acid.  As Boz moves to a position to shoot the pudding he yells to Atalaya, “You are supposed to let me open the doors!”

Inman casts Chromatic Orb at it for full damage at level 4.  The things gets a little bit of frost on it but, nothing happens.

Atalaya hits with her longsword, Amaurea strange laughter can be heard as she swings it towards the pudding.  She makes a slice in the pudding and there is no damage to her sword, but the pudding just splits where she swung and then goes back together.  Atalaya jumps back away from it and the black pudding makes a pseudopod which tries to attack her, but misses.

The Black Pudding moves towards Boz.

Cirilli is guarding the door out of the room.

Nevil hits the pudding with her morningstar (magical weapon) it takes no damage, but does splat the pudding somewhat.  Nevil uses this attack to channel her Divine Smite.  The radiant damage from the Divine Smite fries the pudding and it just lies there stinking up the place.  Nevil hits it with another blow from her morningstar amd then casts a level 2 Divine Smite on the pudding.  It becomes little bits of burnt, crusty nastiness. It smells like a burning dumpster.

We get the idea that it was being used as a garbage disposal.

Cirilli comes over and asks what it was.  Boz explains that it is a Black Pudding and that they tend to eat things.

We give Captain Skarne a chance to talk.  He tries to scare us with the promise that the Red Wizards are here in the tower and using it as a home base.

We search the living quarters, not finding anything else of value.  We do find 2 hidden staircases.

The group found two sets of stairs

They tied the captain to a chair in the pantry/cupboard where the Black Pudding had been.

They went down the circular set of stairs

Atalaya suggests that we get some light for those who can’t see in the dark.  Inman casts his Light Cantrip on his scimitar.  Atalaya pulls out a torch from her bag of holding and lights it for Boz and Cirilli.

Zombies and a sentient net attack the group on the spiral staircase.  The group easily dispatches the aquatic zombies.  Cirili takes minor damage and is protected by the group.

As they head down the stairs they see a fishing net wrapped around the center support pole of the stairway.  It is decorated with bits of shells, starfishes, seaweed, fishing weights etc. and also dead bodies of fishmen (Koalinths).  Once we are all on the stairway Atalaya detects that the “dead bodies” are actually Zombies… Koalinth zombies to be exact.

Atalaya calls out:  “I think they are zombies.”  As the zombies start moving, the net detaches from the central support column and falls on the last two party members heading down the stairs, Boz and Cirilli.  Boz is able to dodge away from the net and avoid being grappled, but Cirilli is caught in it.  The zombies start climbing down from above us.  Another zombie moves up from below and tries to body check Atalaya but doesn’t do any actual damage.

Zombie 2 tries to crash into Cirilli, but misses

Atalaya attacks the Zombie that crashed into her, pulling out Amaurea and listening to the Master’s laugh as she swings the blade into Zombie’s undead flesh, causing 12 points of damage.  As she swings again her foot slips on the wet slimy step and she falls down.

Boz reaches for the net and pulls it away from Cirilli so that he can slash it with his shortsword to free her from it.  He causes 14 points of damage to the net.  He maintains his grasp on the net.

One of the Zombies goes after Cirilli causing 4 points of damage as he shoves her into the column.

Nevil steps over Atalaya and attacks Zombie with her morningstar and does 7 points of damage.  It falls down next to the dead body and doesn’t get back up.

Nevil cheers on Cirilli.

Cirilli breaks the net grapple and crawls out of the hole in the net that Boz made.

Inman pulls her behind him as he advances on Zombie 1 and Zombie 2.

The net tries to attach itself to Boz, but he avoids being entangled by it.

Zombie 2 tries to body slam Inman and shoves him against the column for 6 points of damage.

Vaz attacks the net with his sword and finishes it off.

Zombie 1 crowds down the stairs and tries to shove Inman and can’t.

Inman takes two swings at Zombie 2.  He hits it for 8 points and 5 points of damage.  Zombie 2 is still standing but looks really hurt.  Barnacles have been flying off it.

Cirilli holds her action.

Zombie 2 attacks Boz and misses.

Atalaya yells out “Duck!” to Inman and once he does, she shoots Zombie 1 with two arrows which both hit for a total of 14 points of damage.  She shoots a hordebreaker arrow at Zombie 2 and kills it.

Boz moves up to Zombie 1 and kills it with a swing of his shortsword.

Inman says that “We need to kill something that smells better.”

Nevil cures wounds on herself (2 points).  Atalaya, seeing her still hurt comes over and casts a cure wounds spell (2nd level) on her for 12 points of healing.

Once they are ready to move on, Vasilya checks the door for traps and finding none and finding it not locked he asks Atalaya if he should open it.  Atalaya asks if he hears anything.  She moves forward and opens the door to find another Sea Captain and a Red Wizard standing the the room with the sea pool.

Atalaya pulls out her lightning arrow and shoots it at the wizard for 8 points of damage.  The wizard is able to dodge the lightning effect.  Her second arrow causes 6 points of damage.  She ducks back into the hallway to allow other party members to move into the room.

The Red Wizard makes a hand motion and there is a shimmering over her body.

Inman: holds his action

Nevil:  Moves forward and attacks Captain Hornigold with her morningstar for a total of 15 points of damage.

Inman:  Attacks Captain Hornigold with his scimitar for 15 total points of damage.

Boz:  Shoots his shortbow at the wizard, causing 16 points of damage.  She recoils in surprise at the hit.

Captain Hornigold:  Swings twice with his scimitar and misses both times.  He attacks with his dagger in his off hand and fumbles, dropping his primary weapon as he tries to recover.

Cirilli:  Looks like she wants to move forward, but stops at a warning glare and hand motion from Atalaya.  She holds her action.

Atalaya moves forward, pushing between Vaz and Nevil and shoots twice at )the wizard for  8 points of damage.  She then Hunter Marks the Red Wizard. (2pts)

Red Wizard:  Casts Cloudkill:  She holds up her hand and a noxious sickly green cloud circles everyone in the room except herself.  (Cirilli is not in the room).  We feel burning in our eyes and start coughing.

Inman:  Fails his saving throw and takes 25 points of damage from the poison cloud.  Inman attacks Captain Hornigold.  His scimitar swing misses.  He tries to cast Scorching Ray, but this also misses.

Nevil:  Makes her constitution saving throw and takes half damage (12 points of damage).  She attacks Captain Hornigold with her morningstar and causes 6 points of damage.  The Captain is starting to look bloodied.  She swings again and misses.

Boz:  Makes his saving throw and takes 12 points of poison damage from the green cloud.  He moves himself out of the reach of the poison gasses and shoots at the wizard.  He hits for 7 points of damage.  The Red Wizard keeps her concentration on the Cloudkill spell.

Captain Hornigold:  Fails his saving throw and takes 25 points of poison damage.  He bends down and picks up his sword and then tries to bolt.  As he moves away Nevil swings her morningstar at him, hitting him for 6 points of damage.  Inman also swings at him with his scimitar and causes 8 points of damage.  The Captain makes it past them and then falls to the floor as he reaches the doorway.

Cirilli uses her held action to plunge her shortsword into his chest making sure that he is dead.

Atalaya:  Makes her saving throw, taking only 12 points of damage from the poison.  She moves out of the area with the gas and shoots at the Red Wizard with 2 arrows for a total of 25 points of damage.  As the first arrow hits her in the heart she is pushed back into the wall and loses her concentration on the Cloudkill spell and the gas begins to dissipate.  The second arrow immediately flies at her, splitting the initial arrow and plunging even deeper into her heart.  She dies.

As Nevil and Atalaya converge on Inman, Cirilli comes into the room asking, “Is it safe?”  She is told that it is.

Inman is hurt badly from wounds and especially from the gas.  Nevil does some healing on him as Atalaya also places a hand on him and casts a 2nd level cure wounds on him for 9 points of healing.  She then hands him [Inman]  10 goodberries and watches to be sure he eats them.

At this point we can finally look around a bit.  We are in a room with a pool of water in it.  There is a large iron crab that Atalaya recognizes from her previous visit as a submersible craft that can take them to the lower reaches of the pool where they had hidden The Eye previously.  There is a block and tackle and an iron cage.  Across the pool a door can be seen.  Atalaya says that it leads outside the tower and can be accessed when the tide is low.

They are on a paved area in front of the tidal pool.  There does seem to be a tile floor to the tidal pool, except for a large square opening in the middle of it.  There are steps that lead down into the pool at the far end.  The steps lead to a lever.  This may be a part of the block and tackle.  The back portion of the pool’s walls are rocky.  (In the back SE corner is a pot with magical flames coming out of it?)

We search the area and the body:

Pirate:  A bag with 40 gp

A bag with 6 silvery pearls

Red Wizard:  A spell focus, a Thayan  symbol pendant

Cirilli asks, “What are the marks over her head?”

Inman explains that they have to do with mind control and antimagic fields.   He adds that warriors have markings to make them easier to control (they don’t do magic).  On the Red Wizard they were most likely for protection.

We initiate a short rest.  Atalaya buys back hit points using 1 hit die (11 points)

Vasilya uses one hit die to buy back 6 points

END GAME

Healing takes place before the group investigates the door.

On the other side is a red wizard and a pirate capitan.  An epic battle ensues as Cirilli is held in the stairwell.  The wizard casts cloudkill on the party and the pirate captain.  Inman and Nevil are taken to near death.  Atalata saves the day by killing the wizard before the cloudkill spell can kill the pair.  Cirilli steps over the dead body as the group inspects the chamber

The pirate captain has a scimitar, a dagger, and pouch of 40 gold and 6 pearls

The wizard has a spell focus, Thyan symbol pendant

The group talks about taking a short rest in the cavern with the mechanical crab but move back up to the wizard’s living quarters as it is an easier place to defend if needed.

3-6-24; 3rd-4th of Eleasis

 Game notes 3-6-24

Group returns to the boat for the night. It is windy and rainy out in the sea.  The weather is making some sea chop on the ship as they sleep.

3rd of Eleasis, 1491

Early morning on the ship.  It is a cool, refreshing summer morning.  The sky is overcast

People wake up and have coffee and gather to head back to the tavern from the night before.

The party returns for breakfast and quizzes Darby the innkeep of The Sea Urchin (the happy tavern) about the weather.  He mentioned the storm appeared to stay out at sea.  They have had more rain for crops, trade appears unaffected and there are still occasional sunny days.

The group conducts a brief shopping trip for training supplies.  (Includes gambesons for Cirilli and Atalaya, (and others if they want to participate) practice short swords, pells, clothespins, rope for a clothes line,)

The group investigates the rental options for a covered wagon and a horse team. 20 silver to rent but they must pay 5 gold collateral each.

We all (Atalaya, Cirilli, Vaz, Nevil, Inman, Sorrow) head out.  Sorrow is    grateful to be out of the rain inside the wagon.  On the way to Briarwood the weather gets worse… stormier and darker the closer we get to Briarwood.  While traveling, Atalaya sits with Vaz in the front of the covered wagon to enjoy the trip through the green road ways.

We look for the small inn/tavern and ask for the mayor.  The mayor reports all is well,  the froglings have not returned and the stream has returned.  It has been mysteriously wet of late.  The road often turns to mud.  They seldom get to see the sun.  Rain has happily returned.  The mayor buys a round of ale for the group then the group heads back to Stamfort the same day.  They return the wagon and horse and retrieve their 5 gold collateral.

The group sets sail south towards Pelagia and Blue Haven. Group sets anchor in a cove near Pelagia that is somewhat sheltered from the storm by the Pillars.  The storm is caused by our storm giant friend.  The group seeks to speak to their storm giant friend in hopes to discuss rotating the storm area so that no one area or town bears the entire brunt of the storms.  The group stays on the ship for the night.

4th of Eleasis, 1491

The day dawns with thunder and lightning and lots of rain and wind.  The winds actually howls.  The group eats a filling breakfast.  Sorrow and Ivar stay on the ship with the crew.  Atalaya, Nevil, Vaz, Inman and Cirilli will be in the group heading for the wizard’s home.

The ship is left in the cove and the group travels on foot to the wizard’s home.   The ship rolls in the choppy sea.

They reach a structure shaped like a truncated pyramid near the edge of the cliff that has a slot and runes.  Atalaya says that the place they are headed is on the pillar across the way (cliffside and beach with an area of water before the pillar).  Atalaya tells them that we have to get the substance from the pyramid to use to keep the harpy away while we cross over.  Nevil deciphers the runes before Inman and gloats with her achievement. The pyramid takes money (1 platinum per person) to give a squirt of good smelling essence to protect against harpy attack.  Atalaya insists on paying the squirty pyramid of harpy protection 1 platinum per person.  The bridge has been made invisible.  The group uses sand to make the bridge seen.  The harpy hovers over the bridge and watches the group ominously.  We also keep a careful eye on the Harpy.

The group is seeking Brinecane, the storm giant.

After crossing the bridge the group opens the massive doors after Atalaya reveals that this was the home of a deceased wizard they previously sought for guidance to destroy the eye.

The immediate doors open easily after Vaz investigates it for a trap.  The door ahead of them has a sign that says “Knock and Enter.”  Atalaya and Nevil attempt to knock and open the door and nothing happens.  Vaz detects a magical glyph on the door.  Cirilli attempts to find the glyph and can’t.  Vaz shows it to her.  Inman uses his Magic Hand and opens a trapped door, and we manage to avoid the frost trap that explodes with frost and ice blasting out about 20 feet.  We do feel the cold.

The trapped door opens into a large room with 6 large columns, 3 to a side.  There is graffiti on the floor.  On the far side of the room are two statues, one of a humanoid male, scholar with a book under one arm.  The other is of a half seal part person.  There is writing on the back wall.  It says:  When glancing at the setting sun, passage to her shrine will be won.

Then a puzzle of pillars is solved by turning the base of the pillars with Pelagia on them to the west. A door opens, revealing a spiral staircase that heads up.

However; another hidden door is found. This opens into an elevator with a single blue stone.  Atalaya says that the stone will send them down.

.Atalaya reveals that the tower has been pillaged by their group before. This is when she remembers that they had found the pieces to make the Chime of Opening.  Boz is shocked to learn that, in the bag of holding, is a chime that opens things.  The group enters a door to see an elevator with stone.

Going down one level the elevator stops.  There is not a blue and red control button.  Inman enjoyed the ride in the elevator.  The door opens and

the team discovers the “play room” of oddities.  The room is filled with “artifacts” and statues. They also see metal levers in the walls and chains hanging from the ceiling (pull chains).

Atalaya thinks that she remembers the green quill pen opening the door past the giant shark jaw blocking it.

There is also a table with tiles that were left in the correct order from Atalaya’s previous trip through the room (tiles showing the evolution of life).  They pull the lever and the door pops open.

Solving a tile puzzle, the team opens the door to find a Thayan battle wight.  It is wearing red armor.

Inman immediately identifies the figure as a “damn Thayan battle wight.”

Atalaya immediately shoots at it twice with her longbow and +1 arrow, with both hitting for a total of 19 points of damage.  She Hunter’s Marks it (3).

Vaz shoots his shortbow and hits it, doing 25 points of damage and kills the Battle Wight.

The group wonders what the Battle Wight was doing there.  Vaz asks, “What do we do if we find a (Red) Wizard?”

Nevil answers:  “We kill it.”  She then compliments Vaz on his shot.

We head down the short corridor to the door that leads to the outside of the structure.  Vaz investigates it and then opens it.  We see the base of the pillar and another pillar nearby.  The wind is whipping and hollering around us.  There is thunder and lightning.  Vaz sticks his head out and calls for Brinecane.

In the wind we hear an answering “Yes”

Atalaya calls out, “We came to talk to you again.”

We see a large shadow form  levitating in the space in front of us.

Nevil:  “How are you?”

Brinecane:  “Fine.  Things have moved into the tower.  I try to avoid them.”

When asked how long they have been here, she replies that “The moon has come and gone since they came.”  She also adds, “I stay out of their way.  There is a darkness on them.  They scare me.”  She doesn’t know how many of them there are.

Brinecane also tells us that there are ships that come with others on them.  She says that she hasn’t harmed the ships, at least not on purpose.  They don’t stay, they move up the coast. Sometimes the beings on them go into the tower.

Nevil makes some sarcastic comments to herself about starting a visiting internship program here and needing to write some letters about that.

Cirilli is awestruck when Atalaya introduces her to Brinecane.  “I’ve never seen anybody like you.”

Brinecane:  “I would never harm you.” she tells Cirilli and she thanks Atalaya for introducing her to Cirilli.

Nevil:  “We need to go.  We have a tower to clear.”

Brinecane’s form begins to dissipate back into the storm.

Going back inside we check the Battle Wight body.  It is wearing scale mail, styled in Red Arcane Runes all over it.  It is holding a broadsword.  We take the weapon.  The sword has a bad feeling about it.  Atalaya wraps it in cloth before putting it into the bag of holding.

As we are inspecting the body, Inman touches something in the “playroom” and shortly thereafter feels a fine prick.  Looking up he sees little shark jaws snapping around him.

Nevil:  “What did you touch?”  She sees Inman swatting at a number of shark jaws.

Inman:  “I don’t know.”

Nevil pulls out her (new) morningstar and strikes at the jaws closest to her and does 12 points of damage.  It breaks in half and falls to the floor.  She moves to attack the smaller jaws and hits it for another 12 points of damage.  This one also is knocked down and breaks into pieces.

Atalaya pulls out her longsword, Amuarea, and swings at the jaws closest to her hitting and breaking it.  She moves to reach the last and swings, but her swing is off, as she is needs to be sure she is not hitting Inman.

The Jaws attack and bite Inman.

Vaz attacks with his shortsword and breaks the final jaws.

It is determined that Inman had picked up the Narwhal horn.  He picks it up again, but nothing happens.  It is put into the bag.

Nevil:  “No more touching”  Directed at Inman, (but also as a reminder to Cirilli)

Cirilli, disregarding that advice, picks up some of the shark teeth and puts them into her pouch.

They head back to the elevator and allow Inman to push the blue button to go down another level.

Atalaya listens at the door before we open it.  She hears voices, both male and female.

Woman:  “You know you stand to make very good money.”

Man:  “I’m in.  I’m in.”

Woman:  “It will be very lucrative for you.”

Man:  “I don’t think they know what is happening in Daggerford.  The Duke        is a fool.”

Woman:  “Daggerford is ripe for the taking.  _________ (Iytha?) will pay you.

Inman is asked something about the Red Wizards.  He replies (quietly) “No respect for life, powerful allies…. They are wizards… They surround themselves with minions.

The door to the room has a puzzle lock to open it.  Atalaya is able to solve it fairly easily.

There is a quiet click to the door.

The door is pushed open and the man and woman turn to look at who is there.  We see only the two (man and woman).

The woman is beautiful and is wearing a blue dress that is not remarkable.  She looks vaguely familiar to Atalaya, but she can’t place her.  The man is dressed as a flamboyant privateer.

The two turn and do a double take.

Inman activates bladesong.

      GAME ENDS

6-26-25 1st of Elient Candlekeep

Chapter 1:  Breakfast Game starts with us entering The Hearth.  We are greeted by Leaf, the waitress.  “I heard what happened.  ….” She ...
