Game notes for 4-3-24
Surprize Fight in the Wizard’s Laboratory
Group finishes the short rest having stored the captain in the slime closet.
The group goes downstairs to the laboratory. Upon approach the group can hear the muttering and scuffling of one individual. Atalaya sneaks to the corner of the hallway to learn more about the occupant but no additional information is gleaned. She returns to the group to share information.
Nevil, Atalanta, and Inman lead the way. Inman’s failed sneak alerts the occupant who calls out “Who’s that?” and then pushes their head around the corner. It is a female Red Wizard. She exchanges glances with Atalaya and initiative is rolled. During the battle the Red Wizard flees to the laboratory where she cowers as wind swirls and forms a lesser air elemental.
Atalaya quickly sets a Hunter’s Mark on the Red Wizard and then attacks with her longsword with one of the two swinging connecting with the wizard causing 10+2= 12 points of damage.
The Red Wizard holds up her hands and a shimmering floats over her body and a sparkly purple aura surrounds her. She kicks the door open and runs into the laboratory. We hear a loud whoosh as she enters the room.
Boz dashes into the room, standing near the wall to the side of the door.
Cirilli moves forward down the hall, but can’t make it into the room.
Inman also dashes into the room.
The little tornado in the room is flinging around dust and picking up loose items in the room and throwing them around. There is an odd smell about it.
Atalaya moves into room, trying to avoid the tornado’s winds and flying objects to advance on the Red Wizard and swings Amuarea at the Red Wizard again. Her first strike hits and did 10+2=12 points of damage. Her second swing misses.
The Red Wizard holds up her hands and blasts fire at Atalaya and Inman. Both make frantic ducks to get away from the fire and most of it misses them. They both take a total of 9 points each of damage.
Nevil makes her way to the Red Wizard and attacks the wizard with her morningstar dealing one blow of 6 points and a second blow for 12 points.
Boz moves to the doorway, trying to prevent the Cirilli from entering and to prevent the Red Wizard from leaving the room.
The tornado whooses past very quickly and hits Nevil, Inman and Vaz.
Inman is tossed back 10 feet into the curved wall of the laboratory and is lying prone on the floor. (Inman looses 11 hit points)
Vaz looses 3 hit points.
Cirilli holds her action, still standing a little back in the hallway.
Inman stands up and casts a level 3 Witch Bolt at the Tornado and hits it for 23 points of lightning damage.
Atalaya moves to the tornado swings at it two times with her longsword. Somehow or another the first swing does 5 points of damage to the tornado. There is no effect to the second swing. Atalaya disengages and moves away from the tornado.
Nevil lays hands on Inman and provides some healing.
Boz swings with the shortsword at the tornado and does 4 points of damage.
Tornado: there is a huge gale force blast in Boz’s face causing 42 points of damage and he falls to the ground, unmoving, not breathing.
Cirlli grabs Boz and pulls him into the hallway (and hopefully) away from the tornado.
Inman casts Witchbolt level 3 again at the tornado for 22 points of damage. The tornado explodes and there is purple dust falling all over the floor.
Atalaya runs to Vaz and squishing up 3 Goodberries, push them into his mouth and forces a swallow. Then she takes a breath, casts Cure Wounds and provides him with 10 points of healing. (He now has 13 hit points)
Nevil moves up to Boz and also casts Cure Wounds, providing 17 points of healing (He now has 30 Hit Points)
As Cirilli and Nevil attend to Boz, Atalaya and an effort to expend some of her anger strides across the room to search the Red Wizard’s body. She finds a pouch of powered diamonds and a vial of Alchemist’s Fire. (the vial is filled with a flaming flowing liquid that looks like lava. The vial is warm to the touch. When it is shown to Inman, he identifies it as Alchemist’s Fire and says that it can be thrown and when the vial breaks and it is exposed to air it will flare into flames. He also explains that the powered diamond is worth a lot of money and is used in wizard spells.
Atalaya looks around the room for anything else of interest. The room is already picked over and the wizards don’t seem to have brought anything new here. There is no chest. She finds some damaged books, that seem to be about taxidermy and animals, field guides, some trashy romance books etc. The books are in poor shape, with mold and mildew on the pages, and other unknown sticky substances. The books are considered a lost cause and left on the floor of the room.
They see another door in the wall that looks much like the one in the kitchen area. Conjecture about what it contains is discussed. Boz checks it out and is sure that it contains another pudding as the one upstairs did. (He has a very successful roll.) We leave it alone. Maybe one of the Red Wizards or their friends will inadvertently open it and be surprised by the contents.
Retrieving the Submersible & the Return to the Hond Ebrarth
The group returns to the living quarters. Nevil updates the captain and the group descends to the watery room with the crab in search of the hidden chest. Atalaya and Boz investigate the ten levers to learn how to pilot the craft.
Lever 1 pulling extends / push retracts tail and fins
Lever 2 open close shudders front windows
Lever 3 side windows to shudder open and close
Lever 4 extend retract claws
Lever 5 open close claws
Lever 6 tail and fins move to propel the craft
Lever 7 turns left and right
Lever 8 eyes of the crab light up
Lever 9 ascend and descend
Lever 10 rear hatch opens and closes
Inman ritual casts water breathing on the pair. They take the crabby craft below to get a hidden chest. The sentient kelp inhabiting the pool did not seem to notice the craft.
Upon returning, it is decided that the pair will take the crab to the ship while Inman, Nevil, and Cirilli, retrieve the capitan, and meet the group at the beach as quickly as possible.
The crab is hauled on board with the recovered chest. Boz remains on board and is exchanged for Sorrow. Atalata and Sorrow take a rowboat to the beach to meet the second half of the group.
Nevil, Crilli, and Inman retrieved the captain from the closet and retreated to the entrance of the tower where the harpy bridge is. On Atalaya’s insistence, Sorrow is sprayed with much protest with the harpy repellent. The captain is not protected with such spray. The group attempts to rub the remainder of their stink on the capitan. The harpy charms Cirlilli and the captain. Inman stops Cirilli, Nevil gets tough with an intimidation attempt. Crilli shakes it off, the captain does not. Atalaya shoots the harpy who runs. She shakes the captain to break the charm. The group returns to the ship.
Evening on the Hond Ebrarth
Using the ship’s block and tackle we bring the submersible onto the ship and get it down into the hold (rearranging supplies already in the hold as needed.). The chest that was lashed to the claws of the machine was retrieved and placed in an empty room on the living area deck.
Once the submersible is loaded, Annie is told to set sail for Blue Haven.
Taking Captain Skarne below deck to the common area, Nevil heals (12 points) giving him a total of 13 hit points.
Sorrow admits to having made a stew. The group eats with the captain and chats. Skarne asks for ale, but Nevil brings him a cup of nightcap after he agrees that tea would be acceptable. Nevil wants him relaxed and not thinking about trying to escape. Skarne asks if this was Captain Hawk’s ship. We don’t directly admit to that, but he gets us to say enough that he is sure that he is right about his guess. Sorrow is informed about the demon and updated about the relations between the Sea Princes and the Red Wizards. Sorrow is very upset about the news of Pencheska and the information that she was the demon who was pretending to be the Duke’s girlfriend. Also, that Atalaya believes that she was also the demon who was the “Hope” that ensnared Sorrow. During the talk it comes out that Skarne was involved with the slave trade. Sorrow becomes very upset, leaving the table. He is not willing to sit at the table with someone who trades in slaves.
Sorrow is informed of the need to interrogate the captain tomorrow. The captain is placed in manicals, and locked in a crew cabin. Dinner is boring as the group cannot speak freely with the captain on board. A crew meeting is held on deck with the crew instructed to be aware that Skarne is a prisoner that we expect to give over to the guard in Blue Haven and to be aware for him to make any attempts at escape.
The evening is subdued with people spending it in their own cabins.
Morning 5th of Eleasis, 1491
The new day starts with rain and wind, but this seems to be calming down, the higher the sun rises. By afternoon it is a hot summer day with clear skies and a light breeze.
Upon checking on Skarne it was determined that he had been a “good boy” the night before with no signs that he had tried to break free.
Atalaya starts breakfast in the morning with Nevil and Cirilli assisting her when they get up. They talk about what had happened in the tower and with the harpy. Cirilli is grateful that Nevil was able to snap her out of the charm set upon her by the harpy. Nevil worried that she was sharp with Cirilli, but Cirilli discounts that, saying that it broke her out of enthrallment. Nevil had done what needed to be done to save her.
After breakfast most everyone moves away from the Skarne and Nevil attempts a “Cone of Truth” on Skarne. He is able to avoid the effects of it on Nevil’s first casting, but succumbs on Nevil’s second attempt. Nevil repeats the questions from the day before getting the same responses. He is afraid of the Red Wizards. He does say that Lythra was the main wizard at the tower.
Nevil decides that Skarne has earned the right to clean himself up. She gets him a bucket of warm water, a towel and soap. She removes his manicales and states that he can wash himself with an observer, but that the observer isn’t going to be her. Sorrow volunteers and after grabbing a cup of coffee, glares at him while he cleans up. Sorrow tells him “I really want to kill you, so if you do something I am going to.” He has not been given new clothing, so he has to make due with what he has. (Does he try to wash any of the blood out of them?”)
Once Skarne is cleaned up, re-manicaled, and returned to his cabin and locked in, Nevil, Sorrow, Vaz continue to talk. They discuss where they might find Hawk. They decide that they need to ask at whatever ports we come to whether or not Hawk has been seen. The feeling is that Hawk would be heading south rather than north, although at one point she was trying to sell things to Captain Zendros in Salt Marsh.
During this Atalaya takes Cirilli to her cabin and they work on Cirilli’s meditation skills. They are there for about 1 to 1.5 hours. (See cut scene for this)
Nevil takes Sorrow to the top deck to speak where Skarne cannot overhear them. She asks Sorrow to play a particular song with variations to the words and notes/chords that she will provide him. She explains that it is so that they can contact the local Harpers in Blue Haven. Sorrow realizes that he has done this for Seraphina before, without understanding the significance. He also realizes that Kay does this. Sorrow says that Seraphina is used to trying to protect us and that she “doesn’t play too many cards.”
