Chapter 1: After the Battle, 9th/10th of Eleasis
Game begins at end of battle with werewolves
Healing: Provides healing for those who need it (Inman? Nevil, Boz)
Body search: two of the werewolves were in a hybrid form. The rest were in wolf form. Looting the bodies we take their 2 spears, 6 gold pieces and 1 healing potion. (See Treasure/Money lists)
The bodies of the werewolves are pulled out of the house and piled up to be burned. Use wood from the forest. The bodies of the dead Red Wizards are also burned in the fire. (Atalaya is very glad to have them out of the bag of holding.)
While this is happening the Ravens disappear and the Gur return, having changed into their black robes and pulling the red sashes tight. Nevil asks if one of the “Winged friends can circle the house and check on the werewolf camp. Rennic says that he will do that.
Rennick searches flying around the house and to the werewolf camp
Nevil asks Vinique more about the portal in the graveyard. Vinique says that “we did not create it.” “Hag pulled the body out of the grave to make the portal.” She goes on to explain, “It is thin here, the veil, you know what I mean, the veil is thin here.” “She wanted a place to ______________. She is not sure what happened to the body in the grave when the portal was made.
Nevil walks the graveyard to detect magic then divine sense: She uses a zig zag pattern to walk through the graveyard (and nearby area?” trying to find remains of the body using Detect Magic. When she tries this with her
Faint desecration over the child's grave: Divine Sense, she detects a sense of desecration in the graveyard at the grave of the little girl. Nevil asks Vinique is the portal is literally in the grave. Vinique says that it is. Nevil says that she is “trying to understand if the sense of desecration is coming from the portal or the child’s body. Is it okay if I dig it up?” Vinique asks if she doesn’t know that already. Nevil says that she doesn’t and won’t until she digs up the grave.
Vinique says that the Gur do not disturb the dead. Nevil responds that “we are concerned that the child is not at rest.” She then asks Vinique “If it (the portal) didn’t exist, would you be okay with this?” Vinique says that it would be okay if the portal was closed. She adds, “I’m not comfortable with dealing with the dead.
Nevil asks Vinique if they would agree the unrested child spirit is upsetting and if it is worth risking losing the portal to attempt to rest her spirit. They agree.
Bonfire set to burn werewolves: While Nevil is doing this, Atalaya with help is getting the bonfire going and burning the bodies.
Inman asks Nevil if she is going to consecrate the grave. Nevil says that she isn’t sure whether or not she can, but she wants to try. She plans to do a ceremony in the morning using her holy water.
Rennic eventually comes back and reports that he didn’t see anyone.
Taspar says that “We owe you. This was a good thing you’ve done. Thank you.” He shuffles into the kitchen and sits down.
Set watch/Long Rest
Nevil prays for spell adjustment
Rest of the Night passes uneventfully, we all get a good night’s sleep.
Chapter 2: Morning, 10th of Eleasis
In the morning we smell breakfast cooking in the kitchen.
Atalaya and Nevil take time for morning prayers before having breakfast.
She attempts to consecrate the child's grave: Nevil takes an hour to perform a ceremony in an attempt to consecrate the child’s grave. She is using a lot of holy water and modifying the burial ritual spell. Inman and Sorrow are with Nevil while she performs this ritual.
And rechecks with divine sense: She continues to detect that the area has been desecrated. Nevil decides that they need to dig into the grave itself to figure out what is going on below ground. She thinks that there are shovels in the house, maybe the mudroom??
Nevil searches for shovels
Chapter 3: Exploring the Basement
Boz, Atalaya, and Cirili search the basement and find a crypt: Going down the basement stairs they find a cold, oddly shaped room. The walls are made of bricks. The door farthest from us (in the SW corner) swings open on rusty hinges as we enter the basement. We head over to investigate. At first glance it appears to be a chamber of some sort, maybe a tomb chamber??
A male spirit says “I can’t leave: We hear a spooky voice saying, “I can’t get out.”
Nevil calls down looking for shovels: About the same time we hear Nevil calling down the stairs asking if there are any shovels in the basement.
Atalaya calls her down: Atalaya calls Nevil, wanting her to be a part of checking out the voice. Nevil and Inman hurry down the basement stairs. She tells Nevil that there is something down here and that she needs to use her Divine Sense and help determine what we are facing. Nevil does detect something. She asks the entity if it is willing to talk to us.
The spirit repeats: We hear a soft whispering voice echoing “Where are you boy?” and “I can’t get out.”
A well is discovered: Looking in the chamber we see that there is an old well, where the voice seems to be coming from.
Inman casts waterbreathing on Vaz: Boz asks if we are going down there. He looks unhappy about the prospect, but says that if we are planning to climb down there, he should be the one to do it. Inman ritually casts water (10 minutes) breathing on Vaz just in case it is needed.
Nevil casts detect magic: Nevil uses the 10 minutes to cast Detect Magic. She does not detect anything magical in the well room.
Boz climbs down the well and he hits the muck: Vaz attempts to climb down the well wall but ends up falling into the muck at the bottom of the well. He asks for a torch.
He finds a gold lion shaped locket (baron's wife pic inside): Anything else in the bottom of the well is trash. He climbs back out of the well, awkwardly pulling himself over the edge of the well. He is covered in muck. Inman uses prestidigitation to clean Vaz up. It takes repeated uses of the cantrip to actually get him clean. The grungy looking locket cleans up well. It is a golden cameo locket and when it is opened it has pictures of a beautiful woman in it, who appears to be the same lady as in one of the pictures in the attic room. The Baron’s wife? The locket does not give off any magic vibes to Nevil’s Detect Magic spell. It is silent in the basement. We don’t hear anything. There are no more ghostly whispering sounds.
Vaz says that this is a creepy place. Nevil wonders if maybe the Baron was trying to find the kid and got stuck in the well.
Someone says that the room is full of sadness.
Nevil spritzes holy water around the basement/well. Not as formally as before.
Inman pokes through the stuff that is piled in the corner where the stairs come down. “There are tools here.” He pulls out some shovels and gardening tools.
There is another door down here. Vaz investigates it. It is not locked, but is stuck. Nevil says that she can open it for us, but when she tries she fails to push it open. Vaz is able to open it with a mighty shove.
Inside the room we see what looks like it might have been servant quarters. A windowless room. Two beds, two wardrobes, candlesticks, a rug. Nothing of interest.
We head back upstairs.
They take the locket to the child spirit: Nevil asks the child’s spirit if she will talk with us again. She says, “we have been trying to put you to rest. Do you feel better? Nevil uses the same Yes/No system as before (Moving the doll=yes, spinning the mobile=no.)
“We found this (the locket) in the well. Is it your father’s (YES)
Is this your dad? Yes
The picture Is this your mom? Yes
Do you feel better? No
Can we dig up your grave? Yes, Yes The doll falls off the surface it had been on as the Spirit indicates “Yes”
Before leaving the room Atalaya picks up and returns the doll to its place.
During the morning the members of the Scarlet Sash (Gurs) have been keeping the bonfire burning.
Leaving the nursery, we head back to the graveyard with the necklace and the shovels.
Sometime during the morning Nevil has contacted her horse Shep and told him to return bringing the rental horses with him.
Chapter 4: Digging up the Grave/Scarecrow Battle
The group digs up the girl's grave: The graveyard is surrounded by a wrought iron fence. There are 4 graves in it. Nevil starts to dig at the grave she had determined was desecrated. Sorrow is very unhappy with the grave being disturbed. (So is Vaz.)
They find a decayed coffin: We find a rotted wooden coffin once we dig to a depth of 6 feet.
When the coffin is cleared, Nevil starts to open it.
Boz protests and walks to the house: Vaz is “deeply unsettled” by this and he backs off. Nevil tells him to go into the house. He heads towards the house.
Nevil opens the coffin and out pops a scarecrow like effigy and two walking hands: Nevil cracks it open and sees a big rag doll or scarecrow. …. As soon as the coffin is opened wide enough the scarecrow sits up in the coffin in the grave. Nevil quickly sprinkles it with holy water.
Faster than we can watch, it comes out of the coffin and also 2 creepy detached hands come out.
Sorrow quickly casts Bane on the scarecrow.
Atalaya uses her wand of Paralysis and attempts to paralyze the scarecrow, but was unable to succeed at that. The Scarecrow continues to move.
Inman casts Scorching Ray at one of the hand things. Three attacks all aimed at the same hand. The hand curls up, stops moving and burns away.
Cirilli: Hunter’s Marks the scarecrow (4) and shoots at it. Her shot misses.
Boz: Turns back towards the graveyard and shoots at the scarecrow. He critically hits it for a total of 23 points.
Nevil: Wacks at the scarecrow and also scores a critical hit. 9 points of damage. It disintegrates with pine needles and cloth falling to the ground around the gravesite.
Nevil turns her second attack on the 2nd hand thing. She completely misses her aim and hits her knuckles on the gravestone.
Claw hand: crawls like a spider towards Sorrow. Tries to attack Sorrow’s ankles, but misses. Sorrow jumps back and kicks at it.
Sorrow: Attempts to stab the claw hand thing with his rapier, but misses (he is not used to aiming that low to the ground.
Atalaya swings twice at it with her longsword. It is “definitely dead” and lying in pieces. Atalaya remarks that maybe Sorrow should attend a few more of the fighter practices.
Tendrils of fog are rolling out of the coffin. Nevil responds by sprinkling more holy water on it. The Holy water doesn’t seem to do much to the fog. The fog begins to pool in the hole with the coffin. The mist is coming out of the coffin lid.
Nevil Blesses the party, and gets out of the grave hole. She casts Divine Sense again. The grave is no longer desecrated. Nevil gets no sense of any undead in the area. The fog doesn’t seem to coalesce into anything.
Atalaya sends Cirilli back to the fire to bring one of the Gurs back to the graveyard.
Inman: Uses mage hand to search through the coffin. It doesn’t find anything.
Nevil: Has been standing at the edge of the grave. The edge starts to cave in but she is able to jump back out of the area that is collapsing. Dirt falls into the gravesite. Sorrow is also standing near the gravesite and is also able to avoid the collapsing earth.
Boz: Asks if we found the child’s remains.
Nevil: No, but this fog is weird.
Boz: You are not detecting anything evil?
Vinique comes back to the gravesite with Cirilli.
Nevil: asks her if she can get any “portal vibes?”
Vinique: says that she can sense the portal.
Nevil tells us that we need to fill in the hole. Those with shovels assist with this. The fog dissipates when the soil reaches ground level.
Nevil: What were these things? Has anyone seen these?
Vinique: tells us that “the Shadowfell has undead creatures, but this doesn’t look like them. This is different, maybe the maker of the portal put it there.” She adds, “You cleansed the grave, perhaps that is enough.”
Nevil: “We should try to talk to her (the child’s spirit) again.”
We head back to the nursery.
Atalaya asks, “Child are you there?”
The doll flies across the room and smacks into the wall and falls down it.
Nevil asks, “Did we miss your remains? Do you know where your remains are?” Nevil feels a force hit her in the chest and it almost knocks her into the wall. (She takes 19 points of damage).
The curtains in the room and small items rattling, wind blows around the room.
Inman runs to Nevil.
