19th of Eleasis: Night
As the Memorial service reaches its end and after we talk with Tali we take our leave of her and head back to the boat.
A quick discussion with Ivar and we decide to head out of port as soon as the ship is ready to leave.
(Ivar gets his crew together and the sails are set and the lines tying us to the dock are released and we head out of Sommerset.
20th of Eleasis
Wake to a sunny but windy morning.
Morning at sea, prayer/meditation, ship’s upkeep, laundry, kata work, armor upkeep, general weapons practice by our party.
The sky darkens and a storm appears to be brewing. Atalaya, Nevil, Cirilli and Sorrow go below (to bake cookies) Sorrow starts making tea in the galley area.
See story thread for “20th of Eleasis, Midnight to the Kraken Fight” for details of what happens during the morning/early afternoon.
As we enter the main chamber in the living quarters we hear a thumping sound coming from Annie’s cabin. Atalaya heads that way to see what is happening.
Atalaya sees a large purple tentacle moving around and bumping into the chair and chest in the room. It seems to be coming in through a broken port hole.
Nevil called out to Cirilli to run top-side to warn the others of the attack. Cirilli, seeing the tentacle, runs back up to the main deck, using the back stairs, shouting about the tentacle coming into the ship down below. There was a tentacle trying to make its way through the porthole in the aft stairway as she went up.
Inman is yelling on the top deck. Boz is with him. They see a large octopus-like creature (small kraken) attacking the ship. It has some type of electrical effect going on around it.
The kraken flings a tentacle towards Boz. It misses. It strikes at Boz again with its tentacle and hits him this time for 8 points of damage. It tries to grapple Boz, but Boz gets away.
The kraken flings another tentacle at Ivar, slapping him and causing 7 points of damage. It tried to grapple Ivar, but Ivar also was able to dodge out of the way.
Sorrow (on crew deck level): Tries to use “Bane” on Kraken, Kraken makes its save and takes no effect from the spell.
Nevil (on crew deck level)” rushes up to the Kraken tentacle and wacks it twice with her morning star. Both strikes hit and she does a total of 18 points of damage to the tentacle.
Cirilli dashes up to the crow’s nest
Inman (on main deck) Casts Phantasmal Killer on the Kraken. The creatures behavior doesn’t seem to change, (but it takes 27 points of damage?).
Boz: Shoots at the Kraken, his shot misses.
Kraken: (Tentacle on crew deck) Strikes with tentacle at Atalaya, striking her and causing 15 points of damage. It tries to grapple her, but Atalaya manages to duck away from it.
Kraken: (on crew deck) then strikes out at Sorrow. It hits him for 15 points of damage and is not able to grapple Sorrow. Sorrow responds with his instinctive Hellous Rebuke reaction. The Kraken either takes 18 points damage (full damage) or 9 points damage (if he saved against the damage)
The Kraken: (on Main Deck) then hits Inman with a tentacle causing 20 points of damage and grapples Inman. :
Sorrow: (on Crew Deck) Moves forward and uses Vampiric Touch on the tentacle coming out of Annie’s room. He causes 15 points of necrotic damage and recovers 7 points of hp at the same time.
Those on the Main Deck are noticing black inkness in the water around the Kraken.
Atalaya: (on Crew Deck) Attacks with her longsword. Her first swing misses as the tentacle makes an unexpected movement, but her second hits it squarely and cuts it off. Atalaya attempts to shut the porthole, but the creature had broken it when it forced its tentacle into the ship.
Nevil heads up the backstairs to go to the Main Deck but finds another tentacle in the stairway. She swings with her morning star at it, twice. The first swing misses, but she hits with the second one causing 7 points of damage. She evokes Divine Smite and causes another 18 points of radiant damage.
Inman: (On Main Deck) Activates Bladesong, He tries to break free of the grapple the Kraken has on him, but fails to do so.
Boz: (On Main Deck) He is in melee range now and tries to hit a tentacle with his shortsword. He misses.
Kraken: Throws Inman across the deck. Inman hits the deck rail taking 6 points of damage and then falls over the rail into the water.
The Kraken then starts to crackle with lightning and 3 bolts of lightning flies from it to the ship. A bolt hits one of the ship’s spars, damaging it. The spar cracks and lists to one side. Ivar can be heard cursing when the spar cracks.
Ivar is working to control the boat and sends some of the deck hands to secure the sail/sails on the damaged spar.
Atalaya: (on the Crew Deck) Runs to the back stairs and takes two swipes at the tentacle found in the stairway, cutting off the tentacle.
Nevil: (on the Main Deck) Looks at what is going on, casts “Bless” on Boz, Cirilli and Ivar. Calls out, “Where is Inman?” Cirilli points over the side of the ship and says that he is in the water.
Inman: (in the water) holds his action until Lonnie is able to lower a rope for him to grab onto and will eventually make his way back onto the ship.
Boz: (on the Main Deck) decides that hacking at the tentacles is not the best plan, draws his bow again and shoots the Kraken in the eye, killing it.
Deep black ink explodes from the creature and turns the water around it a murky black. Sea life begins to float, dead on the surface of the water in the blackened area. The creature and its remaining tentacles sink into the water and out of sight.
Boz and Lonnie help Inman get back on board the ship.
Ivar: “I think that was a kraken, but a mighty small kraken. The lightning… It had to be a kraken.”
Nevil: Asks, “Is that common?”
Ivar: “No!” Ivar looks over the ship. “We are going to have to get that repaired.”
Sorrow: “The ink (of the kraken) is said to be poison.
Nevil wonders aloud if the severed tentacles are edible. “After all, when will we have an opportunity?” The others speculate it may be toxic or very chewy meat.
Nevil and Cirilli head back down to the Crew Deck and attempt to repair, or at least board up, the portholes (Annie’s room and in the stairwell) as best they can.
Atalaya and Boz head down to the hold to make sure that there are no noticeable holes or destruction there. They do not notice any problems. The hold seems okay and there doesn’t seem to be any more than normal water present.
We report what was seen and the attempted repairs of the portholes. Ivar says that there are a lot of little coves up and down the coast in this area where we can pull into briefly.
We sail for a bit, limping along and then Ivar pulls into a small cove.
When we approach there is already a ship anchored in the cove, near some rocks. People can be seen on the other boat. One of those sailors waves at us, acknowledging our approach. The boat appears to be at anchor. The sailors can be seen checking our boat for our colors/name/etc.
We check their boat out also. It is not Hawk’s boat. It looks similar to ours in style/size. It is probably a cargo ship or clipper. It appears to be in pretty good shape.
Ivar says that this is the spot. “We can hangout in this cove until our repairs are done.” He continues, “Not everyone knows about this place.
Nevil questions him about that and Ivar says that this is a pirates’ speakeasy. He says that they have pretty good beer here and that the place is called, “The Harpy.”
There is a rowboat on the beach already.
A sailor looks up and asks “what happened to your spar?”
Nevil explains, "You wouldn't believe us if we told you.”
“Try me, we've seen odd things of late.” said the Sailor.
Nevil answers, shouting back to the other ship, “A baby kraken.”
Sailor: “I didn’t expect that.”
Nevil: “We have some tentacles to prove it.”
Sailor: “Bring it in and show it to Mother. She'll want to see it.”
Nevil: “I think we can spar a tentacle.”
We leave Cirilli on the ship with the crew and Ivar, Atalaya, Nevil, Boz, Inman, and Sorrow get in one of our launches and row to the shore. There is a little beach area at the water’s edge. We can see a building up the beach a bit. It looks like it was put together with spare parts, but there is a warm light making its way through the windows and doorway.
Ivar sticks his head in, looks around and then enters. The rest of us follow him. There is a bar mistress (looks oriental) and three other (male) people in the speakeasy.
The woman: “What brings you through my door?”
Nevil replies, “A spar and some drinks.”
Lady: “What’s that?”
Sorrow: Introduces himself and the rest of us. “This looks like a nice establishment,” he adds.
Lady: “This is not a nice place.” She plops the mugs of beer on the bar in front of us. She then asks if we need a room.
Nevil: “No, we best see the cost of our repair before splurging on rooms.”
Lady: “Darter, they need a spar!”
The other patrons are staring at the tentacle that we brought with us.
Darter looks at the tentacle also and asks, “Is that what damaged your ship?”
Nevil: “Yes, it manifested lightning. struck the spar and scorched the plank.”
Darter: They do make lightning.” Then he asks, “ Are you going to pay?”
Nevil: “Yes, we didn't slap a tentacle down and expect free work.”
Darter: “When do you need it by?”
Atalaya mutters under her breath, “Yesterday.”
Darter: “I don’t have another job right now. I’ll take a look at it.”
The bar mistress? Owner?: Tells us that they have a fish stew for dinner tonight. Shark stew. We can see someone working in the kitchen area. She calls for him to bring the stew out for us.
Nevil and the Lady discuss payment and Nevil gets her to trade the tentacle for the stew. She contemplates that she is going to need to hang it for and day and then tenderize it.
Inman subtly nudges Atalaya and directs her attention to a jar on the bar. It is filled with pickled humanoid noses.
Nevil asks, “Mother, who is the collector?”
Lady: “I am. Those are the people who thought it would be a good idea to come to my place and cause trouble.
Her kitchen help (Strider :) brings out bowls of stew for each of us as well as some black bread. The stew is of acceptable quality. Not the worst or best that we have had.
Darter tells us that he has made boats in Waterdeep and some for the King’s Nay and some around Salt Marsh.
Ivar says that “it probably won’t be cheap.”
We finish eating
Darter pulls his hood over his head and we head back to the ship. It is raining. Darter looks over the damage. “This isn’t bad, about 150 gp,” he offers as a repair price. “I’ll have to do a little wheeling and dealing.”
Nevil asks how long it will take him to make the repairs.
Darter responds, “Two days, maybe three. This isn’t that bad but it takes time to get materials.”
Darter continues to look around him at the ship. “Yeah, I made this boat. This boat has been around. You are not the original owner.”
Nevil: “no, but ships do trade hands with the right business.”
He then stares at Ivar. “You, you look kind of familiar too,” he says as he points to Ivar.
Ivar: “I've been around.”
Dartar (mostly talking to himself): “It’s been a weird month,” he adds.
When questioned about what he meant by that he says that captains have gone missing.
Nevil asks, “Capitans, missing? Like who?”
Darter replies “A guy named Skarne.”
Nevil: “No kidding.”
Darter wants half his payment up front. Atalaya leaves to go to her cabin to gather the equivalent of 75 gp, using a couple pp to help lighten the load. The coins are put into a canvas sack.
Darter leaves. “I’m going to get some supplies and tools.
We go to sleep after setting up a watch schedule. Atalaya makes Goodberries.
The night passes uneventfully
21st of Eleasis
Darter returns to the boat and begins making repairs, starting with the portholes that were damaged by the tentacles.
Darter recognizes our ship as that which he built for Captain Hawk. He outright asks Atalaya about it and she reluctantly admits that he is right.
Continuing Days
We spend “a couple of uneventful days in this cove before sailing away. The sun does come out before we leave and we spend some time hanging out on the beach. We continue practices including swimming practice for Cirilli.
