10-18-23 23rd of Flamerule: Back to the Ruins cont.

23rd of Flamerule, cont.

Late Afternoon

Chapter 1:  Back in the Ruins

Atalaya, Nevil and Vasilya complete their short rest.  We feel refreshed and decide to complete the task of clearing the ruins.  Atalaya gives Vasilya and Nevil two more Breathing Potion vials.  She has 6 left, one of these in a belt pouch for easy access should something happen to her cloak.

During the short rest Nevil spent her time learning the properties of the morningstar weapon she had acquired in the ruins, although she has not attuned to it.  It looks good with her armor and is magical in nature.

Once we are ready to enter the water again, Atalaya puts on her Cloak of the Manta Ray.  Boz and Nevil each drink one of the water breathing potions.

We enter the water and make our way to the room with the life sized chipped statue of Procan holding his trident and with the coral.  In this room we find a skeleton that seems to be that of a Procan priest.  There is a holy symbol or Procan (a little trident) on a wave and gems.

Looting room (random treasure) we gather 100 gp of gems, a piece of jade worth 100 gp, and two pearls worth 100 gp each.

We see a shape coming toward us.  It is a man sized shark.

We head towards what might have been a windmill.  We see light in the cracks.  ….

Walking over rift…(?)

There is an open door.  Through it we see 3 little lights.  “Follow me to the treasure” we can almost hear the words being whispered to us.  It feels very creepy although we don’t feel compelled to follow.  As we continue to explore we see lots of rubble, human bones.  The lights remind us of Will-O-Wisps.

Chapter 2:  Will-O-Wisp Fight

A will-o-wisp zips towards Atalaya causing her 13 points of damage.

2 of the lights go after Vasilya.  #1 stings him and Boz yelps but is okay.  He takes 3 points of damage.  #2 attacks.  Its light goes out and it disappears.

Boz:  attacks.  The lights waver and then glow bright again.

Nevil:  Attacks the same one that Boz did with her short sword and misses with both her 1st and 2nd attack.

Will-O-Wisp 3:  Attacks Boz.  There is a flash of light.  It misses Boz.

Will-O-Wisp 1 Attacks Boz but does not hurt him too badly.

Atalaya:  Swings twice at a Will-O-Wisp and does 11 points of damage.

Boz:  Swings and misses.

Nevil:  Moves to engage a Will-O-Wisp.  She makes 2 attacks (4 swings) and hits once.  The Will-O-Wisp’s light goes out.

Will-O-Wisp 3:  Attacks Atalaya and misses.

Atalaya:  fumbles on her next attack.  She lost her bearings in the movement of the water.

Boz:  Hits and kills the last Will-O-Wisp.

We search the Will-O-Wisp room.  In it we find:  (W4 Random Treasure)

  1.  3 more gems worth 50 gp each

  2. Brass mug with jade inlay.  It is well done and in good shape.  Worth 200 to 250 gp.

  3. Crushed skeletons:  looks like they were killed by the grindstone.

  4. A little golden lion figurine.  It is small enough to fit in a pocket, about the size of a spool of thread.

Chapter 3:  Continuing the Search

We move to the next building.  In the first room there are benches lining the wall.  There are 3 skeletons in rusted chain mail.  There are stone counters and benches.

We check a skeleton.  It is in guard armor.  There are more skeletons in similar armor.  We find:

  1. A couple of gold and silver pieces and some dice.  Total value about 25 gp.

There is nothing on the counters.

There is a door on the southwest side of the room.  This door is locked.  Boz unlocks it, and pushes it open with his hand.  A tentacle comes lashing out.  Boz is able to dodge it (uncanny dodge).  His head hurts and he reels for a minute.  He holds his ears and the temple of his head.  “That hurt” he says and backs away from the tentacle.  We watch as it disappears.  “That door is trapped,” he announces.

Nevil tries to touch the door.  The tentacle comes out and pops Nevil for 11 points of damage. This seems to be a magical trap and the tentacle goes away when Nevil lets go.

Boz tells us that he heard a confused stream of consciousness gibberish.  “Priest… something about the priest…”

Atalaya: holy symbol of Procan or the Kraken  (Not sure what this means.  Maybe that she is checking the door for either of these?)

Nevil uses her divine sense.  She senses this area has been dedicated to something evil.

Atalaya pulls out the dagger and the rod (that we had previously found with the tentacle motifs on them).  Nevil touches the lock with them.  The tentacle doesn’t come out and we hear a clicking sound.

Boz touches the door.  No tentacle appears.  “I think you unlocked the door.”  He opens it.  This appears to be a vault room.  There is an iron bound chest at the end of the room.  The room is in pretty good shape.  Boz makes his way to the chest and examines it.  “I don’t see that this is trapped.”  He works at the lock trying to unlock it.  It snaps open.  In the chest is a bunch of gold… a lot of gold.  (W5B)  Atalaya tries to estimate the amount as she adds it to the bag of holding.

We search the rest of the room.  There were no uncovered hidden areas.

Chapter 4:  Scion Fight

When we make out way out of the Vault Room, we all hear an ear piercing screech.

Nevil makes her saving throw.  We all hear it, wince and push through the pain.  Nevil looks up and sees this thing scream and it (surprise) attacks Nevil.  It looks like a scary merperson.  It is a horrifying thing.  It does not look natural.  This creature jumps at Nevil with its claws using a multi-attack causing 8 points of damage and 5 points of damage.  It fumbles as it tries to bite Nevil.  Nevil reflexively knocks it into the wall and cracks his head on the wall.

We see another Kraken Priest and a tentacle burst out of the floor in front of Nevil.  This 20 sq ft area becomes difficult terrain..

Boz:  shoots his shortbow causing 24 points of damage (attack+sneak attack).

Atalaya: Uses 1 lightning arrow and a +1 magic arrow for a total of 26 points of damage.  As a bonus action she casts Hunters Mark (+5).

Nevil:  Starts her turn in the tentacles.  Fails saving throw and takes 6 points of damage and is grappled.  She doesn’t try to break the grapple.  She tries to heal herself using a level 2 cure wounds for 12 points of healing.

Merperson: unconscious

Priest:  Looks at Atalaya and says, “Come!” as he points and gestures.  Atalaya starts to step forward and then stops herself.

Boz:  Shoots with his shortbow and hits  for 8 + 19 damage (attack/sneak attack)

ATalaya:  2 shots.  1 arrow goes through the heart and the second goes through the eye and into the brain.  The tentacles disappear and Nevil can breathe.

Nevil goes to kill the merperson (scion), pulls out her dagger and slits the merperson’s throat.  When she does this he changes form.   Ugly.

We decide that we need to take it back and get the creature identified.  None of us know what it was.  Not wanting to take the whole creature back with us, we cut off its head wrap it in cut off piece of priest’s robe and put it in the bag of holding.

Boz says:  “Father Brinehanded will know what that thing is.”

Atalaya swims over to search the priest and recover the arrows.  She finds:

  1.  Holy Symbol of Vaalastrom

  2. Bag with some Red Potions in much fancier bottles that usual.  Red and pearly  They look like healing potions.  They have gold seals on them.  (Potions of Superior Healing)  (Random Treasure)

We return to the beach and warm ourselves by the fire that was easily revived.  Once we are warm enough and rested we climb the cliff, (bringing the ropes back with us) and get back into the vardo.  Vaz lights the stove and gets out towels for everyone.

During the evening we count the coins acquired during our explorations.  We have found an equivalent of 1,232 gp.  This is divided between the three of us.  (Equivalent of 410 gp, 6 sp, and 6 cp each).

10-2-23 23rd of Flamerule: Continued Exploration of Warthalkeel

23rd of Flamerule, cont.

Warthalkeel Ruins

Chapter 1: Merfolk

We hear faint voices talking upstairs from us in either infernal or abyssal.  We stealth our way up the broken down staircase.  In the murky water we see three figures standing in a triangle–walking in a loose circle chanting to the kraken god.  One is a merefolk, the other two are weird humanoid creatures–oceanic abominations.  In the corner we can see a large stone table carved to look like a kraken.  It is covered in runes.  There is a huge hole in the wall.

We start having a feeling, an urge coming over us.  Our hands feel like rocks and we want to pray to the kraken god.  We really want to start praying.

Nevil wants to take them out.  Atalaya nods her permission.

Nevil dives into it, going after the nearest humanoid.  She is dual welding and on her first attack makes two strikes at the creature.  First is a critical hit,  9 points damage and misses her second strike.  On her second attack both strikes hit.  She does 7 points of damage and then  4 more points of damage.  (total for the whole attack is 20 points damage.)   Nevil does not think that the creature looks as damaged as it should following her attack.  The creature wheels on Nevil and hisses.  He is bleeding a little bit.

Atalaya:  shoots two magic arrows at a creature for a total of 24 points of damage.  The creature seems hurt.

Scary Merperson (Scion):  It opens its mouth and a horrifying ear piercing screech comes out of it.  Nevil and Atalaya are able to shake off the fear effect of the screeching.  Boz’s face turns white and he falls back a little.  He is “frightened”:  He cant move closer to the creature, is disadvantaged on attacks and ability checks.

Boz:  Critical failure on his attack

Nevil:  Casts Bless (extra 1d4 to attack rolls and saving throws).

In the middle of the three of us a black tentacle burst out of the floor.  It fills a 20 foot square area of space.   Boz dodges the tentacle and takes no damage from it.  Nevil just makes her save.

Humanoid 1: hits Neivl causing 25 points of thunder damage.

Atalaya:  Shoots two arrows into the tentacle.  They appear to have no effect on it.

Merperson (Scion) Zips over to Atalaya and claws and then comes at her with its teeth.  Atalaya takes 13 points of damage.

Boz:  Barely misses the Merperson.  Fumbles with…

Nevil:  Wacks at humanoid.  Critical success.  She makes a total of 2 multiattacks for a total of 35 points of damage.  He is hurt.

Tentacles:  Attempts to grab Nevil, but is not able to do so.

Humanoid 1:  Targets Boz.  Barks in abyssal, points a finger and says, “COME!”  Boz takes a step towards it, and then stops.

Humanoid 2:  Continue to fight Nevil.  Looks at Nevil and says, “HALT!”  Nevil feels her feet freeze for a second and then shrugs it off.

Atalaya:  attacks the merperson with her longsword, 2 attacks.  Both hit.  The Merperson screeches, disengages and swims off towards the wall.

Boz:  Shots the Humanoid 1 for 7 points of damage.  The fear effect on him dissipates when the merperson swims off.

Nevil:  continues to attack Humanoid 2.  First attack, swing 1 hits for 7 points of damage.  Swing 2 hits for 9 points of damage.  Second attack:  Swing 1 hits for 6 points of damage and swing 2 hits for 5 points of damage.  The attacks are a flurry of blades which kills the creature, cutting off its arms.  The is a cloud of grossness around the corpse and Nevil.  Nevil tries to move away from the tentacle.  She is able to do that and moves towards Humanoid 1.

Atalaya:  Shoots 2 arrows.  Both hit for a total of 22 points of damage.  She swims 45 feet.

Boz:  Moves 5 feet within range of Atalaya.  Kills humanoid 1 with his shortbow.

With no sign of the merperson returning, the group investigates the stone table.  It is covered in runes. The runes seem to be a long prayer written in abyssal to Vaalastroth.

They find the following:  (W7I)

  1.  Silver chalice (put in the bag of holding)

  2. Scattered gems

  3. A clay flask… a potion container?

  4. 6 gems

  5. Obsidian dagger– a ritual dagger that has a tentacle motif on it.

  6. Rusty iron flask with shield with thin potion, not a healing potion which was in the robes of the priest.

  7. Gold statue of a kraken (small item)

The merperson didn’t look as human (as Gali?).  It had more and longer teeth and was more beastial in appearance.

We check the area where the merperson disappeared.  We see rocks and more ruins.

Chapter 2:  The Search Continues

We continue searching.  (W7H/random treasure)  The is a half rotted bag in the rubble.  In that we find:

  1.  a stoppered clay bottle

  2. Ring with the Symbol of Procan

  3. Gold vestments, priestly

  4. Silver holy symbol of Procan.

Room full of fish… quippers feeding on dead octopi.

Swim out from the broken area of the building and are outside the temple building.

At one point we see a mud creature lopping in the sand, wandering aimlessly.. No focus.

The area we are in might at one time have been a courtyard.  To the north some pavement can be seen.

Six cracked stone benches, an altar to Procan.  We see some dead skeletons, tattered robes, they may have been priests.  They are wearing the holy symbols of Procan.

On the altar there is a moss agate gem (we pick this up and place in bag of holding.

Chapter 3:  The Altar to Erythnul

We come to a locked door and Boz investigates.  He opens the door and we see the skeletal remains of lots of beasts.  (Not sea beasts).  There is an altar to Erythnul (the god of hate).  It is a big altar made of bones.  We see weapons resting on it.

Nevil checks the atar.  It radiates EVIL to her senses.  Boz waves the algea aside and sees something gleaming there.  The room has a pall of bad things happening there.  Boz investigates the gleaming item.  It looks like a silver weapon that has been laid on the altar.  He motions us over.  Nevil picks up the weapon.  It is a morningstar ( a club with a heavy spiked head, sometimes attached to the handle by a chain.)

The weapon feels good in Nevil’s hand.  It is in good shape, untouched by the water.  Nevil, getting no bad feeling from the morningstar and senses it is a special sort of thing, takes it and keeps it.

Boz moves to the next door (2nd on left) and investigates it and open it.  He sees a swarm of octopi and closes the door.

Chapter 4:  Giant Crabs!

We continue to explore.  Entering a room it seems like it was someones.  Atalaya notices an outline of something in the wall.  It looks like a hidden compartment.  Vasilya checks and opens it.  Inside there is a rusty symbol of Erythnul.  The iron is very rusty.  Nevil takes it and crushes it.

We find a chipped statue of Procan with a trident.  Big fish tank.   Kelp is growing out of the fishtank.  There is a mosaic of Prcan’s holy trident and…

The kelp starts moving and rustling.  Four crabs scuttle out.  Four BIG crabs.  One of these (Tiffany) pounces onto Vasilya, and latches on to his pants leg.

Nevil attacks Tiffany with dual shortswords causing 5 points and 4 points of Damage.

Atalaya shoots 3 arrows at 3 crabs.  All hit.  For 7 points, 12 points and 10 points of damage.

The crab, Nate, goes after Nevil causing her 7 points of damage to her ankle.

Crab, Bong Water(?), attacks Nevil causing 6 points of damage.

Boz:  Kill Tiffany with his shortsword and moves up to Bong

Atalaya shoots 3 arrows again, killing last three crabs.  She recovers her arrows.  The crabs are gathered and taken with us.  There is nothing else in this room.

Chapter 5:  Return to the Surface

We return to the surface and make our way to the beach.  Nevil heals herself for 10 points.

We build a fire to warm ourselves and take a short rest.  We cook one of the large crabs to snack on.
