Under Viallis’ Tower cont.
Chapter 1:
The game starts in the room with aquamarine light from braziers. Four dead cultist bodies.
Atalaya was sent to guard the corridor that cultists tried to flee down. (She picks up her arrows first.) See sees a long corridor with crumbling walls. There are stairs heading downwards at the end of the hallway.
Nevil listened at the door on the west wall. Doesn’t hear anything. She calls Boz over. He investigates the door and doesn’t notice any traps or concerns. (Roll of 6.) He then unlocks the door and tentatively pushes it open. When nothing happens he pushes it all the way open and enters. Nevil takes a Quick Look around the room and calls Inman over. “A wizard’s room for sure,” he declares. They leave the room, shutting the door.
Nevil heads to the double door on the south wall. She hears voices through the door. Placing her finger to her lips, she gestures Boz over. She points to the door and mimes picking the lock. Boz nods. Vaz investigates the door. He whispers, “I “don’t think this one is trapped “ He tinkers quietly with the lick. “Nevil, I don't think this door is locked.”
Nevil says, “Let’s try it”
Inman comes up to them “What do you hear?” He asks quietly.
But Nevil has already opened the door and rushes into the room.
In the room to the left she sees a lit bronze oil lamp. The area to the right looks like another office. Ahead of her are stairs heading down.
Nevil backs out of the room, closes the door, and quietly explains what she found. “Seems like quarters. … No super ritually type things.” She heads back to the closed door after asking Atalaya what should be done.
Atalaya starts to answer Nevil as the door opens and several cultists pour into the room we are in. We all turn to face them, readying our weapons.
Atalaya, her bow already at the ready (from standing guard) quickly fires several arrows at the cultists. Her first two hit a single cultist for a total of 9 points of damage. She gets a third arrow off hitting a nearby cultist for 10 points of damage.
Another Cultist runs into the room. He casts “Hold Person” on Inman. Inman fails his save and is paralyzed.
Boz: moves forward and shoots the cultist standing near Inman. He hits for a total of 17 points of damage.
Cultist 3: Moves into the room, sees Atalaya and commands her to “Freeze!” Atalaya makes her saving throw and continues to ready her next shots.
Inman: Holds action until Nevil moves closer to him. Action: to try to break the paralysis spell (hold spell) on him.
Cultist 4: Rushes towards Atalaya, casting “Inflict Wounds.” The spell does not affect Atalaya. The other cultists look at him with scorn on their faces.
Sorrow: Targets Cultist 1 and Commands him to “Go to sleep!” The cultist crumbles to the ground, curls up in a fetal position and starts snoring.😴 (Inman is no longer paralyzed.)
Cultist ___: Casts “Inflict Wounds” on Inman, causing 16 points of damage to Inman.
Nevil: Moves forward and hits the sleeping cultist with her Morningstar twice, causing 16+12=28 points of damage. The sleeping cultist is now dead.
Nevil looks (threatening) at the two remaining cultists.
Inman: Takes his held action. He starts his Blade Song. He then casts Scorching Ray at the closest cultist. All three rays hit causing a total of 21 points of damage. The cultist goes down. Smells of smoke, burning hair, and dead pork fill the surrounding area.
Atalaya: Sees a cultist and aims both her shots at him. Both hit: 12+9 points of damage. The cultist looks hurt, but is still on his feet.
Boz: Moves 25 feet to stand beside Nevil. He hits Cultist 4 for 22 points of damage.
Cultist 3: Runs into the room to the south, dashing.
Inman: Starts to chase Cultist 3, realizes he can no longer see him, turns back and swinging his scimitars attacks Cultist 4. His first swing misses, but his second connects and kills the cultist.
Sorrow: Dashes 60 feet, following Cultist 3.
Nevil dashes 45 feet, and is on the Cultist 3’s heels.
Atalaya dashes 70 feet.
Boz: Chases after the others and positions himself next to Sorrow.
Cultist 3: Yells, “We have company brothers!” He runs 30 feet.
Inman: Checks the alcove. When he doesn’t see anyone he chases the cultist. (In the alcove Inman sees a pile of carved wooden symbols that look like they could be worn on as a necklace, as a religious amulet.
Sorrow: Hold his action for a clear pathway.
Chapter 2: The Chapel Fight: Faerl Flees
Nevil: Moves forward 30 feet and finds herself in a “situation.” She has entered a room that looks like a chapel. See note in chat
Nevil: Screams “Boss!!” She points her mace at the bald man (Lord Viallis, although the characters don’t know this yet.) and casts “Hold Person” on him. Bald Man is unable to avoid the spell and freezes in place. Nevil makes a quick prayer to the goddess (of thanks).
Atalaya: Shoots 2 arrows, the first at the Warrior near Nevil. The arrow hits him causing 9 points of damage. The second is aimed at Cultist 3 and hits him causing 9 points of damage. Seeing Lord Faerl, Atalaya casts Hunter’s Mark on him.
Faerl: Turns and runs fleeing to the eastern wall. He opens a hidden door and runs through it. There is a brazier nearby the secret door in the Chapel room.
Boz: Runs towards the room. Seeing Cultist 3, he lets an arrow fly. It hits and kills Cultist 3.
Cultist Warrior: Moves towards Nevil and tries to hit her from behind. He misses Nevil.
Inman: Runs 30 feet. “ He casts “Shatter,” at level 4, in a central area, affecting 3 people. (It will not affect the person currently paralyzed by Nevil’s “Hold Person” spell.) All three of the cultists are affected by the spell taking 23 points of damage each. (This include the Bald Man (Lord Viallis))
Sorrow: Moves into sight of those in the Chapel room and then casts Bane on the remaining 3 cultists.
Viallis: Tries to break the spell holding him, but fails. He is still paralyzed.
Wight 1: Flies at Nevil, reaches out its skeletal hand and tries to grab Nevil. Nevil tries to dodge away, and is able to negate half the damage from its touch, taking 7 points of damage.
Nevil: Smiles wickedly. Pops her neck and tries to wack the wight. Her first swing misses, but she connects with the second swing, causing 12 points of damage.
Atalaya: Shoots two (magic) arrows at the Wight. Both hit, causing 12+11 points of damage. The Wight is killed.
Boz: Shoots at cultist 1. He hits him and the cultist dies.
Inman: Runs towards Inman and the Bald Man. He blindfolds Viallis and Inman binds him.
Viallis: Breaks the hold person spell on himself, but is now bound by Inman and Sorrow. He is furious.
Nevil wants to knock out the bound Bald Man, but is persuaded that we can’t take the risk of killing him. We want to get information about Lord Viallis.
Inman searches the Bald Man (Lord Viallis) with Atalaya and Nevil’s assistance. He has a really nice robe which shifts colors with movement. We remove that from him carefully, rebinding him afterwards. The robe is iridescent. We also remove his Vecna amulet and a set of keys. Atalaya puts the keys in her belt pouch. Robe and amulet go into the bag of holding.
Boz and Sorrow quickly search the dead bodies, finding their daggers, 2 scimitars, 2 spell component pouches, 2 Veckna amulets. They are put into the bag of holding.
We promise ourselves we will actually search the room once we clear the rest of the tower and hopefully find Faerl and Lord Viallis.
Atalaya heads out of the Chapel room heading down the corridor she saw Faerl flee through.
Boz: “Keep in mind this may not be the only secret door.”
Nevil: “Yeah, but he went this way. We’ll come back and do a better search afterwards.
The passageway goes south and ends at a stairwell that heads further downwards. We head down into the dark, Atalaya in front searching for Faerl. The passage turns northward.
Atalaya can make out a little more light up ahead. The passageway is now very narrow, dank and smelly. The walls are rough tunnel walls carved into rock. We can hear quiet voices.
Atalaya moves forward trying to be very quiet. Nevil follows, but stumbles and her armor rattles, alerting those ahead of us.
Atalaya quickly takes 2 shots at Faerl, before he can react to our presence. Faerl dies.
Two monstrosities pop out of the ground flanking Atalaya. They are abysmal horrors, (gricks).
Boz: Steps forward with his sword out and flanks one of the creatures with Atalaya. He then attacks it, hitting it for 22 points of damage.
Grick: Tentacle slashes at Atalaya and misses.
Cultist: Charges down the hallway 20 feet and stops behind the northern Grick. He holds up his hand and casts “Hold Person” on Atalaya. Atalaya feels the spell try to take over her body, but is able to shake it off as she pulls out her longsword.
Atalaya then takes two swings with the longsword at the Grick in front of her, missing both times.
Cult Fanatic: Tries to cast “Inflict Wounds” on Atalaya, but misses. Atalaya shakes it off again.
Nevil: Holds her action.
Inman: Casts Light, and fills the space with light.
Sorrow: Holds his action until he has a clear line of sight on an enemy.
Nevil: Pushes past Boz, attacks the Grick next to him. Her first swing hits the Grick for 11 points of damage and it explodes into purplish black ichor all over Atalaya. Nevil is so focused that she doesn’t pull back her second swing. She makes it and hits empty air.
Boz: Squeezes past Nevil and Atalaya and hits the other Grick that is near Atalaya. Ichor flies again, but it is left upright.
Cultist: Takes a swing at Boz. He misses.
Cult Fanatic: runs to the fight. He tries to cast “Hold Person” on Atalaya, but again, Atalaya shakes off the spell as she feels it start to stiffen her joints.
Nevil: Moves up to the Cult Fanatic. She swings with her morning star. Her first swing hits the fanatic, causing 7 points of damage. Her second swing also hits, this one causing 11 points of damage.
Guy with mask by the cultist. Atalaya feels like she should recognize him, but can’t place him. Nevil feels like she recognizes him. She thinks he looks like a younger version of the innkeeper in Greenfast.
Cultist: Swings at Nevil and misses.
Inman: Is hanging out. No clear line of sight, not able to squeeze past the others in the corridor.
Sorrow: Moves forward 30 feet.
Boz: Moves up, steps out of the shadows and ends the cultist’s life.
Atalaya: Turns on the cultist in the mask, grounds herself and swings the perfect swing at the cultist’s neck. She knows it is going to hit, she feels it hit. And then Nevil does something and the cultist’s head remains on his neck and a wound appears on Nevil’s neck. Nevil takes 11 points of damage. Atalaya, in shock over what just happened, misses her next swing.
Nevil: Looks at the cultist and says, “Boy, Fargo says he was missing his brother.” … “Sometimes people choose the wrong path. Do you want to try again?”
The masked cultist drops his sword.
Atalaya starts intimating “The Boy” saying that he better answer Nevil. That she is the only reason he is currently standing. He should be dead right now. Her swing was true and his head was forfeit. Only Nevil’s grace has kept him alive. She sounds really intense. (And maybe a little pissed?)
“The Boy” takes a step towards Nevil. He looks confused.
Nevil uses her Divine Sense. The Boy is not evil by nature. He is however very confused and frightened.
Atalaya roughly pulls off his amulet, knocking his mask off as she does so. She makes no attempt to be gentle while doing so.
Nevil: “For this to work, you need to renounce Vecna.”
Boy: “I’m afraid.”
Nevil: Argues with him about the need for renouncing Vecna and renouncing evil.
Boy: “I wanted to join something. I didn’t know it would be like this.” “I met some people. I was scared to say no.”
Nevil: Keeps repeating that he needs to renounce Vecna and evil. She assures him, in a rather patient manner, that he must do this or his life will end now. If he does renounce Vecna and evil he might just have to suffer some time in jail, which is much better than dying. While Nevil is talking, Atalaya continues to play “the bad cop” maintaining a menacing posture and throwing in a few threatening comments.
The Boy is very scared. He says that there was a ceremony to call Vecna here going on right now.
Atalaya tells him that we stopped that ceremony, the priest is bound and Faerl is dead.
He finally believes this.
Boy: Finally and fearfully, “I renounce Vecna.”
As soon as he says this Atalaya’s posture visibly softens and she starts binding the boy’s hands behind him, but does so without trying to hurt him in the process. She is much gentler than when she removed his amulet.
Boz: Hearing noise behind a door on the west side of the room. Seems to be calls for help. “Didn’t we find some keys?” he asks as he checks out of the door.
Atalaya hands him the keys from her pouch.
Boz quickly finds the right key and opens the door. When he does so he sees Sir Vecken. “What are you doing here?” he asks Sir Vecken.
Sir Vecken: He tells us that after we visited him he decided to head back to Greenfast. Our visit encouraged him to return here.
Nevil looks at him with speculation flittering across her face. “Do you want to take a squire?” she asks him, her gaze on The Boy.
Sir Vecken: I haven’t thought about it.
Nevil talks to him some more and he agrees to consider the idea.
While they are talking, Atalaya addresses a woman who appears to match Mayor Kara’s description of her missing sister. “Are you Yerda?” she asks.
Yerda: “Yes.”
Atalaya explains that her sister is very worried about her. Yerda says that she has been really scared. She is happy to be found and to get to go home.
There are four other people in the cell that are from the village. Sir Vecken looks beat up. He tells us that he was jumped on the trade road and was brought here. The other villagers are introduced as Durz, Jairax, Maise and Seffra.
Sir Vecken relates that there have been some villagers that have been removed from the cell and never returned to it. We tell him that it is not likely they will be returning.
Before we decide what to do next, Atalaya takes a moment to recover her arrows and search Faerl. She pulls off his amulet. Takes his red hat, his nice rapier, 21 gp, a moonstone, _______, a very nice piece of Alexandrite, a snuff box (carved ivory).
Atalaya tells Sorrow that she will save the rapier for him.
Nevil gives Sir Vecken one of the scimitars from the Cult Fanatics.
Three more Vecna amulets are removed from the dead. And they are searched.
At some point The Boy says that it was hard to tune out the whispers or maybe the whispering voices.
Sir Vecken is given charge of the prisoner and the villagers that were in the cell with him.
